Marine Corps leaders have made the long-awaited proposal to adopt the M4 carbine as the standard Marine infantry rifle. The recommendation wouldnt completely phase out the currently-standard M16, but it would push the archetypal rifle into a support role.
This follows in the Armys footsteps, which began the transition to M4s more than 20 years ago. The M4 is in use with the Marines for select roles and is issued to officers as well.

Get rid of that crappy bullet.
The 6.8 would solve nearly every problem.
Wozzey gun, round of a BB gun.
I’ve always been a .30 cal. kind of guy,I see the M4 as a high powered submachine gun.
We had M-14 in Navy, nice weapon.
As an Infantryman back in the ‘80s, I agree. 5.56 is too small for most battlefields and is really only suitable for an unobstructed environment of 100 yards or less.
6.5 or 6.8 minimum. My personal fav is 7.62 x 51 (.308)
“The 6.8 would solve nearly every problem.”
Except that it’s not a 7.62x51mm :) There is nothing wrong with the M14 except the person pulling the trigger. Just use the 7.62x39mm if we want something between a battle rifle and 5.56mm.
I have no combat experience but I do talk guns with vets at my local Rod and Gun club. The Vietnam vets I shoot trap with say they wanted something with more punch but the younger Iraq/Afghanistan guys seem to like their M4’s.
carbine length barrels make it even crappier.
The desire to go carbine over rifle has to do with the increasing role of urban combat over longer distance engagement. The 5.56 loses alot of ooomph over 500-600 meters...and typically most force on force engagements are at less than 300 meters..so a shorter carbine length will fill that role better...lighter, same accuracy etc.
Me either. My Dad earned his Expert Infantry badge, as well as the CIB, two years in VN.
Not long after the initial problems with the M16 (the shape of the powder grains?) some in the field were having, I asked him what he thought of it.
He really liked it and said it worked fine “if you kept it clean.”
I finally got an M4, a `CORE’ made by veterans. Very nice. A lot different from my commie tommie.
Bought a new M1A a couple years ago.If you can see a target, then you can shoot at it.
Oh yeah. Great rifle.
The Rifleman’s Creed
This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me my rifle is useless. Without my rifle, I am useless. I must fire my rifle true. I must shoot straighter than the enemy who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will. My rifle and I know that what counts in war is not the rounds we fire, the noise of our burst, or the smoke we make. We know that it is the hits that count. We will hit.
My rifle is human, even as I am human, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weaknesses, its strengths, its parts, its accessories, its sights and its barrel. I will keep my rifle clean and ready, even as I am clean and ready. We will become part of each other.
Before God I swear this creed. My rifle and I are the defenders of my country. We are the masters of our enemy. We are the saviors of my life.
So be it, until victory is America’s and there is no enemy.
This is foolish. The military needs to stop thinking of one rifle and start thinking about using weapons appropriate to the battlefield. One theater might call for a carbine, another might be more suitable for a longer range 7.62 rifle.
Amazing.
I’d rather it read, “Marines switch back to M14”!
