I grew up in Boston and used to see Bernstein conduct the BSO lots of times at Symphony Hall.
They had special concerts for kids on Saturday mornings.
Those were the days!

One of the best renditions is the Cleveland Symphony, George Szell conducting. Cannot find it anywhere, have it on vinyl. Incredibly beautiful.

Your link is to a performance of this piece. Are we to assume you are the author of the text above?

Thank you for posting. I really am still enjoying the music. Usually I listen to country. It does not sound brooding to me but what does a country listener know. LOL Just an observation, there is a lot of man spreading goin’ on in the orchestra.

I wonder how a person learns the art of conducting? Is it a well defined sort of thing or do you just get up there and play “air orchestra” and if your personal style works then good?

My dad loved this symphony. He owned more than one copy - at least two, one conducted by Bernstein and the other by Otto Klemperer. I think he even dubbed one LP to cassette, just so he could quickly switch back and forth between the two conductors' versions to better hear the differences.
Dad tried to get me to listen to the variations, but at the time I wasn't interested if it didn't feature an electric guitar. Now I wish I'd paid attention.

Philips Complete Mozart Edition (180 CDs - 1990-1991) is available thru Amazon for $2,500 or eBay for $1,750 ... Amazon: “The performances are magical and DEFINE Mozart ... The sound quality of the CDs is superb as most of the pieces were digitally recorded, even the lesser known works of Mozart such as Bastien und Bastienne. The hefty booklets that accompany each volume should be savoured while you listen as they give interesting background about many of the pieces. The booklets are written in English, German, French and Italian. The opera booklets contain the complete libretto in its original language, plus English and any of the other two languages named above.”
Was re-released through iTunes some years back for a lot less.

Live studio recording from Leonard Bernstein and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Live performance of Symphonies 39, 40, and 41 this afternoon by the Boston Symphony Orchestra if you can get to Lennox, MA by 2:30pm. The perfect trifecta.

I'll go with Schumann on this one. To me Mozart is alway "Grecian lightness and grace". Very beautiful, yes, but I never feel great depth of emotion or any "plunge to the abyss of the soul."
I like the George Szell / Cleveland Symphony version a little more, but that's what usually happens to me with George Szel and the Cleveland. They got a spell on me. Thank you for the link to that, RushIsMyTeddyBear.
Cordially,

Wow. Powerful. I had never seen that video and had a very emotional response in a couple of places.
Mozart + Bernstein + that symphony orchestra! What a tribute to the magic of human teamwork, and how the whole exceeds the sum of its parts.
