No, 'Super Mario Maker' Is Not Racist

Super Mario Maker is a game we’ve all been waiting for: Finally, we can create our own classic Mario levels using the Wii U’s touch-screen gamepad. (I’d sure like to have a mouse and keyboard, but the touchscreen is far superior for this kind of thing than a traditional gamepad.)

Ben Gilbert of Business Insider recently demoed the game and was mostly just really disturbed by the big, white, feminine hand that appeared onscreen as a stand-in for his own. This one:

Here’s Gilbert’s reaction:

During a meeting with Nintendo on Thursday in New York City, I tried the game and was immediately struck by the strangeness of a disembodied human hand – bearing little similarity in looks to my own – acting as a stand-in for my actual hand. Yes, I’m a white guy, but my fingers are far from long and slender (sadly).

What if I were, say, a 10-year-old black girl? Or a 30-year-old Japanese man? Or literally anything other than an adult white woman (which the hand appears to belong to)?

Given the mainstream appeal of the mustachioed hero and his ongoing battle against Bowser, you’d think Nintendo – a company that’s repeatedly shown willingness to be inclusive – would have thought of this.

I sincerely doubt Japanese men feel left out when it comes to Japanese-made video games, but that’s neither here nor there.

Initially the Nintendo representatives Gilbert met with didn’t realize that the hand could, indeed, be swapped out with others of a different shape and shade. After the initial post, Gilbert was informed by Nintendo that yes, in fact, you could swap out hands to better represent your own.

But the implications of the original post—and the post as it stands—remain clear: Failing to be inclusive even in one small

Since Nintendo is a Japanese company, how do these idiots not know the hand might be from a Japanese woman?

So, sir, are you admitting that you are so irretrievably Racist that you cannot accept seeing a hand in a video game that doesn’t look like yours?
