In a 1½ hour span Wednesday night, Carrick lost a community tradition some six decades old.
The St. Basil Catholic Parish summer festival the parishs biggest annual fundraiser will cease to exist after brawling teenagers prompting its early closure out of fear for public safety, according to the parishs pastor, the Rev. Stephen Kresak.

Father Kresak said the festival has been plagued by brawls before. He said a small group of teens who came from outside the Carrick community cause problems, and he believes the festival gave teenagers a place to congregate without being noticed as out of the ordinary.

The annual festival was supposed to run from Wednesday through Saturday night but only lasted about two hours on its opening evening as six brawls between teenagers were reported between 9:30 and 11 p.m., Pittsburgh public safety spokeswoman Sonya Toler said. Two police officers were serving as security that night, but the teenagers only dispersed when more officers arrived.

Where were the men of the parish....I guarantee that this would not have happened in ANY parish that I have ever belonged to....Parents were very observant to insure the safety of the parish youth and intruders would have soon been “escorted” from the premises.
I actually know something about that that part of Pittsburgh. It was settled mainly by German immigrants (even though "Carrick" is not a German word!). Up until perhaps 1995 it was a nice city neighborhood. Not rich by any means, but safe. Good people, black and white, there.
But when the Pittsburgh mills closed, decent jobs dried up. The neighborhood started to deteriorate. Middle class folks who could, moved out to the safer suburbs. Section 8 moved in.
The thing about that is that you don’t have much of a fundraiser without lots of nonparishioner attendance. You can have a parish fellowship event, but it’s not going to bring in a lot of money.
Must be those Pennsylvania Dutch.
Some of my family worshiped at this church decades ago, when the area was nice. I used to drive there the past year or so, it has changed. It is obvious that it is blacks causing problems, but since we are in the age of Obama, no one will stop them, so they ruin things for everyone else.
Good point. Then perhaps the parish should sell admission tickets in advance. No tickets at the door. I'm guessing local nonparishioners would make the effort to walk over to the church and buy those tickets.
But of course that wouldn't stop determined local youths from crashing security barriers. Police presence would have to be massive.
What an ugly mess. Perhaps there is no solution except for the parish to move its festival. But they shouldn't close down!
There was a time when certain comments were considered racist and would get people banned. Not so much anymore. Obviously people have come to believe that the truth is not racist.
It’s also obvious that people are getting fed up. But, sadly not enough.
Carrick is also where black or two murdered a white kid in a group home. http://triblive.com/news/adminpage/7559514-74/grant-shepard-complaint#axzz3gpG9owtF

Tough situation. Even if they could get another location cheaply, they would lose the local attendance. As long as the authorities won’t act against the “teens,” decent people are out of luck.
One would sure like to see armored Knights of Columbus wreaking havoc with swords, though.
Must be the Irish. Probably Duckies.
If Barry O'Bama had a son.
Ferals gone wild!!!
“Apparently hundreds of Obamas sons blacked streets and sidewalks”
I don’t know if that’s a typo or poetry, but I like it.
I was born in Newark and I can tell you that most if not all of the Italian festivals there and in Belleville have long since disappeared. There may still be one at St. Lucys in Newark but I am not sure.
They are afraid to say what must be said about WHO is causing the trouble so they surrender to avoid violating PC. Commendably Christ like...
Ill have to check back after I relaunch my browser...the youtube videos arent playing well at all
None of these feasts carry an admission fee. They are open to everyone. Including the riff-raff.
Yes, we have the “Sausage Fest” here in late September and the nonparishioner attendance is very good. Have yet to witness an altercation in all these years but demographics are different here. The elephant ears are excellent, games are entertaining, and the women run a thrift shop in the parish school.
Its also obvious that people are getting fed up. But, sadly not enough.
Racist?
Excuse me?
Dindo Nuffins is the name of my cat thank you very much....the fact he is black is irrelevant.
You should apologize to Dindo...his feelings are hurt by your micro aggressions.
