It is a poorly written copy.
Chicago Police officer shoots male bat in Lincoln Park
Here, also in Chicago, cops stopped a guy who was apparently beating a bat.
“Police Shoot Man During North Side Bat Beating
According to police, the man refused police orders to stop the beating and an officer opened fire on the suspect to save the victims life”

I’ve noticed that it happens a lot when they describe police shootings. Each time it makes the perp seem less perpy.
In this case both the headline and the line that I documented take the bat away from the perp.
In the example of the headline, the bat becomes the weapon that the cop is using to shoot the perp.
In the example in the article, the bat becomes the possession of the guy lying on the ground.
Lot of guano in this string
I suspect more than a few such headline are meant to be misleading, especially when it serves some larger agenda.
While I have no doubt that goes on, do not discount raw incompetence with language by the presstitutes. Journalism majors are widely acknowledged to be the bottom of the barrel as a group.
I have been to the bat exhibit at Lincoln Park Zoo. Saw fruit bats. Wait, can I saw that? /sarc.
“say” not saw.
Sure.

I didn’t know you could shot a bat
Re: Chicago Police officer shoots male bat in Lincoln Park
I wonder if this officer has a history of violence against male bats. If so, this could conceivably be viewed as a “hate crime”.
As Dirty Harry might say, “nothing wrong with shooting, as long as the right moonbats get shot...”
A batgun, next on the utility belt to the batgrapple, batgas and batarang.

If it was a vampire bat then watch out, that guys not really dead.
