A second Harper Lee book is coming out and is likely to be a wild commercial success. But let's be honest
(Excerpt) Read more at cnbc.com ...
Who really wrote “To Kill a Mockingbird”
Bingo!
I was actually born in Monroeville. My familial relationship with Nell’s family was memorialized via the character of Miss Maudie Atkinson. My paternal (the women :-)) family used to buy hats from Truman’s aunts. They were hat makers. My dad couldn’t stand Truman.. LOL...
Scout found the unfinished manuscript on Bob Ewell’s body after Jem killed him, and later altered the plot to make Mr. Ewell into the town drunk and all-around bad guy.
Someone will run the SW on it and we shall see.
Uh, Scout?'Who Really Wrote 'To Kill a Mockingbird?'
Its pretty plain that Scout is a type of Harper Lee, and Atticus Finch is a type of Lee's father.Harper Lee is a writer, Scout is a painter. Big difference? Not IMHO (in fact, somebody should investigate whether Lee ever painted as a hobby).
To Kill a Mockingbird is an exciting book. It is one-sided propaganda, but still thrilling. The small town personalities are sharp and colorful.
The better question is... Did Harper Lee write In Cold Blood?
Propaganda???????? What propaganda? It’s an American classic. Geez, I sometimes get bugged by FR.
Miss Maudie is lovely. One of my favorite characters.
Probably not, but a lot of the factual stuff may come from her.
Yes, classic liberalism. It was a few pure characters like Atticus versus an array of evil cartoons.
That’s ridiculous. With the exception of Bob Ewell, all the characters are decent, law-abiding people.
Have any of you guys read this book since it went on the best seller list in the 1960s???
She was a researcher on In Cold Blood. You can read that in any Truman Capote biography.
All of Shakespeare's works were written by another guy, also named William Shakespeare.
As was 50 Shades of Schlock. I think we all realize that sales don't necessarily mean quality.
It wasn't until the publication today that we discover that Mr. Finch was a racist. We also find out that Scout herself has her own deep issues with race, and that moving to the North and being liberal doesn't make her a better person with regard to race or anything else. If anything, we find that both books, together, are an indictment of simplistic thoughts and the idea that there are easy answers to social problems.
Go Set A Watchman isn't as good as To Kill A Mockingbird, but it makes the point that racial issues aren't simple, and that thinking you're somehow better doesn't make it so.
Pretty poor "propaganda", considering that it complicates the story, and does nothing to make it easier to explain or understand.
Good propaganda is easily digestible. Go Set A Watchman, written before Mockingbird complicates and changes the story to include moral ambiguity. Harper Lee already knew what happened to her characters when she wrote Mockingbird. What happens is too complicated to make any sort of useful propaganda for anything.
"This is not great literature, and I avoid teaching it at all costs. It's not even good reading. The characters are black and white two-dimensional cardboard cutouts. The rednecks are evil, the blacks are victims, and the self-righteous Atticus is too good to be true. There is nothing here to examine or explore. Critical thinking skills can be checked at the door. Moreover, if the lack of complexity and verisimilitude doesn't stick in your craw, then the insipid narration of the androgynous Scout will. This novel is popular due, in part, to the fact that the reader can feel morally superior to white trailer trash as he identifies with the demigod, Atticus. Shakespeare, the consummate craftsman of characterization, understood that even the evil (save Iago) have some redeeming qualities, and the good flaws. To Kill a Mockingbird is about as deep as a rain puddle."
Have you ever read either book? This new book is an indictment of modern Liberalism and a certain brand of racism from the time period among people who fashioned themselves above the fray. Since it was written before Mockingbird, those indictments apply to both books.
We may not have known Mr. Finch’s motives, but Harper Lee absolutely did by the time she wrote the second book.
Neither book is liberal propaganda.
Read the 1st chapter of Where the Red Fern Grows. Best single chapter of any book ever written IMO.
Apparently Atticus Finch is a racist in this new book. No, not kidding.
