What’s a kilogram?
A mole is an animal that burrows through the ground, or a spot on your face, you have to shave around...
It the amount of matter, which, when destroyed, releases just under 9 x 10^16 joules of energy.
I’d hate to be the guy whose job is to count all those Carbon-14 atoms.
About 2.2 pounds, give or take.......................
.....or a spy in your organization...........
It would take many millenia to do so, so he better start now....................
Ah.
So about $3.43 at today’s exchange rates.
Got it. Thanks.
I enjoy both this guy's videoblog "Veritasium", but Look up "Smarter Every Day"... I like Destin's videos, and he is a decent Christian family man, that has not lost the wonder of a little child in regards to science... Destin teams up sometimes with the Veritasium guy.
Not to be confused with Avocado’s number, which is the number of whole avocados it takes to make 1 kg of guacamole.
Assuming average soil and normal rainfall, Avocado’s Number is generally assumed to be 3.
I hated Avocado’s number in High School Math class!
Timely article. My wife was packing her lunch for work this morning and noted she was taking the last avocado. I recited Avogadros Number. It just came out. She ignored me.
You couldn’t make Guaca-MOLE?...........................
We get small Guatemalan avocados here so, it would be about 5 for us..................
only if you catch them at peak ripeness. which is the hard part.
“When silicon crystalizes, it forms cubic cells of eight atoms each. Thus, it is possible to calculate the number of atoms in such a sphere by examining the ratio between the total crystal volume and the volume occupied by each silicon atom, which can in turn be calculated by measuring the cubic cell.”
It would seem to me that if Si-28 has “cubic cells”, wouldn’t it be easier to measure the mass if it were in the shape of a cube rather than a sphere? Wouldn’t the surface of the sphere, at the atomic level, have partial cubic cells, thus making them harder to count?
Disclaimer: I am not a sub-atomic particle physicist, but I claim I am when I’m chatting up the girls and they ask me what I do. Laz ought to use that line; works almost every time.
“For a good time call Avogadro, 6.022 10^23.”
Calling it “Avocado’s Number” irritated the teacher no end!
Thanks goodness this nonsense doesn’t effect the USA and Burma, because we both still use pounds instead of kilograms.
But even if it did effect us, it would not be as bad as switching from gallons to litres. If you put litres in your car’s gas tank, the engine will not function correctly. It may even blow up.
