The Australian Defence Force (ADF) will begin taking delivery in 2016 of about 30,000 new EF88 Austeyr 5.56 mm rifles under an AUD100 million (USD75 million) contract to be signed later this month, a Department of Defence (DoD) spokesman confirmed to IHS Jane's on 7 July.

The new EF88 is an AusSteyr with a *Picatinny* scope rail, and, hopefully, made of an improved plastic compound that's less resistant to melting after eight magazines worth.
Oh, and the new gat is or can be moulded in either desert tan or the Australian *AusCam* camouflage pattern, known to the Diggers as *Spotty Dots.*
To be fair: the thing really is set up for improved interfacing with current electronics and optical equipment...which may mean it'll become obsolete in about 18 months.
