Here is the link and here is an excerpt from step two after verifying it was an EMP: http://thesurvivalmom.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/One-Second-After-the-Lights-Go-Out-Special-Report-5-11.pdf It would be good to print this list out, put it in a plastic sleeve and tacking it to a bulletin board or place that is seen. 2. DELEGATE Immediately begin dividing up the tasks on this list between family or group members. There’s a lot to be done and your window of opportunity has already started to close. Even young kids can help with filling up sinks and bathtubs with water. Checklist for delegating the basics:  Check phone lines and cell phone connection.  Attempt to turn each vehicle on. Include motorcycles, ATVs, golf carts, tractors – all motorized vehicles.  Check for fires in neighboring houses. Without help from a fire department, these fires will quickly spread.  Fill bathtubs with water using a WaterBOB or a similar product, if possible.  Fill sinks and every large container with water. Additional Water BOBs can be filled and left outside.  Assign one person to pick up kids. See details at #6 .  Look for any device that has the current time and is still running.  Collect all cash, including coins.  Check to see if shortwave/ham radio is working. If it is, attempt to connect with radio stations that haven’t been affected and gather whatever information is available.

I did put spaces in my post with the list, but they did not appear. Sorry for the hard reading. Let me do it again, so FReepers can print and post in their homes, at least, this section.

DELEGATE ( Or do it all yourself)

Immediately begin dividing up the tasks on this list between family or group members. There’s a
lot to be done and your window of opportunity has already started to close. Even young kids can
help with filling up sinks and bathtubs with water

Checklist for delegating the basics:

Check phone lines and cell phone connection.

Attempt to turn each vehicle on. Include motorcycles, ATVs, golf carts, tractors – all
motorized vehicles

Check for fires in neighboring houses. Without help from a fire department, these fires
will quickly spread.

Fill bathtubs with water using a WaterBOB or a similar product, if possible

Fill sinks and every large container with water. Additional Water BOBs can be filled and
left outside.

Assign one person to pick up kids. See details at #6.

Look for any device that has the current time and is still running.

Collect all cash, including coins.

Check to see if shortwave/ham radio is working. If it is, attempt to connect with radio
stations that haven’t been affected and gather whatever information is available.

Did you read the book, One Second After? The protagonist’s mother in law had an older car with no electronics and they were able to drive around unmolested and there was a hippie clan in the woods with older VW’s and no one raided them.

But I do wonder about a real life situation as you described.

Tablet, netbook, laptop or other device with a battery. Solar chargers to keep them running.

Or go old school and take notes or print out what you think will be most helpful.

Dang it - meant to add something else to my post but as soon as I thought of it my brain decided not to remember for the few seconds I needed to type it.

Oh well I should be used to that now. Might come back to me eventually.

Further on in the book, didn’t a local elected official attempt to confiscate the car?

That was pretty accurate, btw....

There will always be some “authority figure” assuming they are entitled to your stuff.

I forgot, it has been years since I have read it, but I have loaned my copy out to my surrounding neighbors.

I do worry about my stuff being taken away for the “greater good.”

I am trying to find a book written by two men with tactical training on how to defend your neighborhood. It is written in large print and in a binder so it is useful after an attack.

Help, please anyone, I don’t seem able to find it.

Meanwhile, to help you think about defense, here from the Survival Blog:

http://survivalblog.com/defending_your_neighborhood_by_mmc_and_dk/

“The planning and execution of these methods revolves around the key words: Defend, Reinforce, Attack, Withdraw, and Delay. This is a time tested method used by the Marine Corps when writing an Operations Order and can be used as a planning tool prior to the action of defending against the enemy threat and for considerations to going on the attack against a potential enemy threat....

Key terrain is all ground and structural features of your immediate and extended neighborhoods. Keep your defense area small if you are a small group of people. The larger the group the more you can expand your defense.

Evaluate your immediate home structure. Choose which windows will be used as fire ports. The inside wall areas beneath and alongside the windows can be reinforced with sandbags. Purchase at least 100 sandbags. They can be filled with sand or dirt, not gravel. If shot, gravel can become a secondary projectile.

Evaluate your neighbors’ homes for defensive positions inside and outside.

Survivability is fortifying everything from your primary position to your tertiary position and improving obstacles that you’ve placed.”

Thanks, Lulu! I’m sitting here waiting for a severe storm to blow through here. Always makes me nervous so figure it is a good time to print! I know a lot of this and am fairly prepared for short term emergencies now. However, lots of good reminders here and handy little lists. Again, thank you for posting the link for us!

You may be thinking of “A Failure Of Civility”.

Hard to find an affordable copy, alas.

Amazon is selling it for $199.99, which puts it out of reach for most of us :-(

Thank-you. It is. I understand it is the most comprehensive manual on how to join forces with your neighbors and I thought to spread the cost with several of my like-minded ones. At $200. it is expensive, but probably worth more than others of its type because they give you real life scenarios and plans. But since I do not have any war training, I do not know if I should lead in this matter among my friends.

Stay safe and give us any helpful hints from your current situation that would be good in an emergency.

Meanwhile, do print out her list on what what papers and information you should have assembled and be ready to take with you if you have to leave home.

http://thesurvivalmom.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Grab-n-Go-Binder.pdf

They include papers for personal, family, financial, household, legal and medical documents.

Hang in there, you’re with friends, samiam.

LadyBuck, I found the first chapter to read for free:

https://kindle.amazon.com/work/a-failure-civility-jack-lawson-ebook/B00CST2CW0/B00CW1TCTA

And here is the Kindle version.

http://www.amazon.com/Contact-Tactical-Manual-Collapse-Survival-ebook/dp/B008GHZ7NE/ref=sr_1_sc_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1436221283&sr=1-1-spell&keywords=failure+of+civiltiy

But then you have to print out anyway.

I’m always worried about purifying water. Here are the Survival Mom’s instructions with pool shock:

Using pool shock, specifically calcium hypochlorite, is an ideal way to have a reliable water
purification method on hand, using a substance with a very long shelf life.

You can buy 100%
calcium hypochlorite at www.inyopool.com A one-pound bag can purify up to 10,000 gallons of
water.

Here are the directions you’ll need.

Add one heaping teaspoon of granular calcium hypochlorite to two gallons of water, or
5 ml. to 7.5 l. of water. This mixture produces a solution similar to bleach.

Use one part of this solution to 100 parts of water to be treated.

Allow the mixture to
sit for at least 30 minutes before drinking. If the smell of chlorine is too strong, pour the
pure water from one container into another several times to allow the chlorine to
dissipate.
