They boost their teams from the sidelines and promote them by appearing in calendars and at fan events, but some sports cheerleaders say they are still not considered team employees and are paid what amounts to less than minimum wage.
California legislation believed to be the first of its kind in the nation is set to change that.
The bill approved by the state Senate on Monday and sent to the governor for his signature would require that cheerleaders be paid at least minimum wage and overtime and sick leave if they work for professional sports teams based in California.
Everyone who works hard to provide a great game-day experience deserves the same basic level of dignity and respect on the job, starting with simply being paid for their work, said Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, who authored Californias legislation.
A similar bill was introduced in New York state this year.

I’ve heard those girls are basically looking for a husband. The amount of pay or whether they get paid at all will not affect the girls who want to do this.

NFL teams don’t allow Cheerleaders to date the players. Most of girls have modeling careers or Dance Schools that they use their NFL experience to promote. Then there are the ones who are attending Law School.
I remember about 40 years ago there was a kerfluffel in San Diego when some of the Charger girls posed for Playboy magazine. The Charger owner, Gene Klein, immediately fired all of them. Problem solved. None of the fans missed them.
Maybe they could replace them with robots like the McDonalds counter staff will be...
