Tim Thompson's friends all agree he was great man.
He was a mentor to neighborhood youth. He knew just how to make people laugh. And he bought donuts for his girlfriend's dance class on the day of their big recital.
Friends and family who gathered Tuesday night (June 24) to remember Thompson still are in shock over his violent death Sunday. Thompson, 40, was gunned down in the driveway of his girlfriend's mom's home in the Lower 9th Ward.
No arrests have been made in his death.
Tonja Walston, Thompson's girlfriend of four months, said whoever killed him "took away somebody that was meaningful."
The pair dated for only a short time, but Walston said they had an "instant connection."
They met earlier this year, at an event where they both were giving presentations. Walston, who said she'd "been single for a long time and didn't like anybody," said her co-workers caught her eyeing Thompson.
Her co-workers called the minister who was running the event to see if Thompson was single. The minister gave Thompson her number, and Walston said he called her that night.
They talked until almost 3 a.m.
"I felt like we were in high school," Walston said with a laugh.
Her family loved him.
"He was a loving guy," said Walston's mom, Janie Marchand. "He was an understanding, patient person."
They recalled how he helped wean Walston's grandson off of a sippie cup.
"He was a clown," Walston said. "He loved to dance."
The evening before he was killed, Thompson showed up at Walston's house in cowboy boots and a cowboy hat, ready to attend a Western-themed dance for a club her mom belonged to.

This guy has a better working resume than 0bama. What a loss to the community. A real working man and not a sidewalk agitator.
Sounds like obama thugs put a hit out on him.
