Summer is here, which means reviving the contentious debate over whether or not a favorite ice cream topping’s name has racist origins.
“I’ve heard them called jimmies ... It’s after Jim Crow,” said Carly Fishkin, 25, who grew up in Wellesley and prefers to call them sprinkles. Her nearby friend, Izak Shapiro, also 25, agreed.
They are two of many who have heard that the word jimmies has deeply racist connotations.

I hate the term “sprinkles”.
FGS, ANYTHING can be a “sprinkle”.
“Jimmies” helps detail it. Nonpareils are “sprinkles”, the little stars are “sprinkles”, even tiny bits of colored sugar can be called “sprinkles” - because all of them get sprinkled on the cupcake/ice cream!

Never heard of that terminology. Native central MDer LOVE crabs to eat, never heard anyone refer to them as anything but males and females!
I grew up near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. The words were part of the language there.
Maybe it’s more common in the Tidewater. But then, I only eat them (restaurants never stated “jimmy” or “sally/sook”, just male/female).
In Connecticut, we called them “shots”, only the Massachusetts folks called them “jimmies”. Maybe the word should be changed because of the association with bullets and guns, eh?

In years past, I drove a GMC Jimmy. Would they trash my vehicle today if I still drove one?
