STUDY: SCANT EVIDENCE THAT MEDICAL POT HELPS MANY ILLNESSES
AP ^ | June 23, 2015 | Lindsey Tanner

Medical marijuana has not been proven to work for many illnesses that state laws have approved it for, according to the first comprehensive analysis of research on its potential benefits.

The strongest evidence is for chronic pain and for muscle stiffness in multiple sclerosis, according to the review, which evaluated 79 studies involving more than 6,000 patients. Evidence was weak for many other conditions, including anxiety, sleep disorders, and Tourette's syndrome and the authors recommend more research.

Supposedly the ailments marijuana treats would make it a miracle drug.

I’ve watched pot stop an oncoming seizure many, many times in a user, as well as even out chemical imbalances leading to bipolar disorder and more. Once you witness first hand the effects that pot has on a person who truly medically needs it, you’ll never understand. Interestingly enough, my wife was once extremely anti-MJ, until she seen it first hand. Changed her outlook entirely, especially seeing the oncoming seizure, and seeing it stopped in its tracks. But that’s ok, now. Keep spreading the lies and ignorant propaganda.

How do you see pot stop an oncoming seizure? Does the seizure light come on?

your anecdotal “evidence” in favor doesn’t trump scientific evidence that is against its benefits (or inconclusive).

pot is an election year issue for democRATs because it gets stoners, libertarians, and aging hippies to the ballot box. that’s the ONLY reason pot legalization has ever been on the ballot.

morphine has medical uses too, but you don’t see ballot initiatives to make it legal over the counter.

i also find it hypocritical that the people most veghemently against tobacco also tend to be the people promoting pot as a miracle drug. i’m not say you are one of those... just that the correlation is strong and i don’t see how tobacco smoke can be deadly, while pot smoke is healthy to that crowd.

i voted against pot legalization here. it’s an embarrassment to this state and now every time you meet somebody who finds out you’re from CO, they make a stupid marijuana joke.

It isn’t smoking pot that is curing people. Its the use of cannabis oil which is highly concentrated and has a very low percentage of THC. Its proving effective with cancer especially brain and lung cancer. Getting good results.

It’s the placebo effect, really. I was a heavy pot user in my youth and used to espouse the virtues of it as a calming agent for my anxiety issues. As I’ve gotten older and been sober for many years now, I found my anxiety issues were because of pot, not the other way around.

I don't recall reading that pot can cure anything, but admittedly this isn't an area I'm likely to research.

I did do some research about the effects on combating the sickness that accompanies chemotherapy when my mother was desperately ill with cancer.

At the time, I was willing to endanger my security clearance and engage in an illegal buy if she thought it would provide any relief and if she was willing to try it.

She declined. Towards the end, the doctors gave her as much morphine as she wanted, for which I am truly grateful.

The fact that marijuana has almost zero medical use was a well a well established fact long before the left and the libertarians started demagoguing on the legalization movement.

I have a friend who suffers from seizures. He can tell when they are coming on (and after many years, I could tell, too, by his behavioral changes). I can watch him smoke, even when he is on the very edge of that seizure, and the pot stops it in its tracks. As I said, unless you see it firsthand, you won't understand. But let me tell you, the moment you see it, you become a believer, as did my wife.

A friend of our family was dying of cancer many years ago. She refused further chemo due to the pain and the advanced stage of the cancer and requested to be allowed to go home and die in peace. She smoked pot daily for over a year before finally succumbing to the cancer, but she died a very healthy 135 lb. Despite wasting away to under 100 lb. when she was on chemo and being given only 2 months to live, she gained over 40 lb. in 2 months and lived another 10. She credited pot for that “miracle” every day she could.

So the muscle relaxing and pain relief that I experienced on Friday night was really my mind telling me that the 4 or 5 tokes I took on my pipe was in fact me just imagining that I was relaxed.

That would explain why I didn’t get the munchies, hallucinate and giggle uncontrollably.

Correct that, NO evidence that marijuana does anything that is not better controlled by another drug or no drug at all.

I’m not saying that at all. It did the same for me. The problem for me was that I lost all motivation to do much of anything even long after I quit. As with any drug, it’s about being mature enough to handle it. Some people, esp. those of us with addictive personalities, cannot manage their consumption and get consumed themselves. That was my problem. Being clean and sober for many years now has been the key to my personal salvation.

I don’t begrudge anyone who wants to use the stuff, and if measures are taken to legalize it through legislation and not using cute tricks like they tried to do in Florida by using a Constitutional amendment to pass it, I’m all for it being legal.

You have a better source than the AMA?

I watched my mother die from breast cancer and my dad die from congestive heart failure. If either one of them had wanted marijuana I would have gladly got it for them.
They’re dieing people!! What difference does it make what they do?! If it makes them feel better, even if it’s in their own mind, what does it matter?

Evidence was weak for many other conditions

More precisely, "Most trials showed improvement in symptoms associated with cannabinoids but these associations did not reach statistical significance in all trials." Sick people seeking relief aren't too concerned about statistical significance.
