There was a huge plume of smoke, Romer told ABC News through a translator. So this is something that just burned in my memory.
That memory would stick with Romer until after his retirement, when he decided to return to his old home to find out what happened to that plane, and more importantly he said, the pilot inside.
Just a year later, Romer would find himself in Arlington National Cemetery, standing alongside the pilots relatives in a moment seven decades in the making, at what would be the young lieutenants final resting place.
For me it is a very moving day, Romer said. Not just today, but all of the days that led up to today.

Herr Romer thank you for your diligence in getting Lt. Herb home.
"Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor."

Agreed,Welcome Home. Thanks for sharing.
Was he shot by Germans or Russians?
Wow. I have goose bumps.
To think this poor guy made it through the crash, only to be shot is heartbreaking. War certainly sucks.
His honor was not restored because his honor was never taken from him. Today’s writers simply have no concept of honor and duty.
Thanks for posting this - great story...
Very true. But remember, the word "honor" came from the German guy or someone who was interpreting his words from German.Use of that word could simply be the result of an imperfect understanding of English by the German guy (if he made his comment in English) or an interpreter with an imperfect understanding of German and/or English.
Probly Germans. Germans were officially encouraged to think of pilots as terrorists and illegal combatants deserving of nothing but death.
Given the years of bombing of their cities, and the hundreds of thousands of German civilians killed, it’s a POV that is certainly understandable, even if I don’t agree with it.
