Phillies outfielder left to throw 48 pitches in blowout loss because bullpen phone was off the hook

So, Ryne Sandberg, manager of the Philadelphia Phillies, how was your Tuesday night?

“It was ugly,” he told reporters. “That was ugly.”

How ugly?

The Phillies, the worst team in baseball, lost 19-3 to the Baltimore Orioles. It was their eighth straight road loss, which marks the first time the franchise has gone winless on a trip of at least eight games since 1883. Dennis Deitch, from the Delaware County Daily Times, put it into context:

The last time the Phillies had a road trip that consisted of at least eight games and no wins, they we traveling by train and stagecoach to polo fields, playing barehanded in the field and spending their offseasons contracting black lung. So, yes, it was ugly.

I forgot to mention that all of them are better than Joe Nathan during his stint with the Tigers, and are sometimes better than others in the bullpen depending on if it’s a good or bad day.

Yes there's more and less, Frenchy was put in to avoid using a pitcher in a blowout, he agreed because had done some pitching in the minors last year. He was the only Phillies pitcher last night that retired the O's without a run.

He was asked if he wanted to go another and said yes, when it was realized that it wasn't such a good idea, he was beat, they tried to call the bullpen and the phone was off the hook, whether it was bumped or the bullpen denizens were pranking is unknown but it took a lot of yelling and towel waving to get their attention.

A mound visit, an upset Utley and couple of runs later Frenchy finished the game. He's a gamer and everyone else was more upset than he was.

Francoeur is just happy to have a MLB job. He hasn’t hit much since his first years with the Braves, all he has left is his arm.

A lot of times a position player will have the best knuckleball on the team and will get put in when blowouts or extended extra innings happen. It’s actually not terrible if they are on with it, usually they can go multiple innings if they have to and the different look gets weak contact. Sometimes just seeing a pitch that’s below ‘hitting speed’ messes up timing.

That perfect game was amazing!

However, still trying to get over that 1964 collapse of the Phillies, (the team with Johnny Callison, Richie Allen, Cookie Rojas, Tony Taylor, Bobby Wine, Jim Bunning, Chris Short, Art Mahaffey, Dallas Green, Manager Gene Mauch, etc. (The Phillies blew a 6½ game lead with 12 games left to play.)   It was unbelievable.

Uh, actually I believe Mr. Jones (#6) played on the 1950 Whiz Kid team that won the NL pennant, along with Granny Hamner, Mike Goliat, Eddie Waitkus (my personal fav), Del Ennis, Richie Ashburn, Bill (Swish) Nicholson, Andy Seminik and an assortment of pitchers including Robin Roberts, Curt Simmons, and reliever Jim Kostanty, managed by Eddie Sawyer - but in a serious vein, until Rubin Amaro Jr, who’s traded the Phils into oblivion, goes away, the humiliation will continue.....

I have such warm memories from the 60’s and 70’s of sitting out on the porch as a kid in the evening and listening to Vin Scully taking his turn on the radio calling the LA Dodger games (the LA announcers back then would take turns calling both radio and TV). That feeling will always be summer for me.
