"If you listen to enough modern rock and metal music, what with the shredding/blasting guitar sounds and distortion pedals and stomp-boxes and so on, it can be a real eye opener to re-listen to the surprisingly smooth and clean sounds of the earlier hits of the Rolling Stones, and to hear the extent to which they favored finesse and musicality over brawn....."

You’re losing a lot of resolution with these cheap digital remasters.
You should what original studio master tapes sound like when ripped to double DSD - 5.6 million bits per second per channel.
They’re not usually commercially available, but those with studio contacts have manged to get files.

1963-1968 produced quite a lot of good music. Some of it was "bubblegum" (but I like it) and some of it was heavily aimed at the drug culture (I like that stuff too).
I think that in 1968 music became angrier and more political. Silly over-paid musicians seemed to actually think they could change the world. Quite a bit of the music got ugly and tiresome. This trend was not universal, but it was long-lived.
Now, having said that, I have to add that the 70s and 80s are my principle musical era. I like progressive rock. I like the anger of the punks. I like the swing of 80s synth-pop. I would never say that "It was all downhill" after 1968.
But a lot of bands got harsh when the hippies turned into communists.

Under My Thumb should be listened along with Out of Time and Stupid Girl. They pay homage to Christy. All three are like fingernails on a blackboard to feministas.

Good observation.
You are probably already aware of a documentary on the British sound called Rock Family Trees - The Mersey Sound Which shows the kids of the fifties in England could not afford good instruments or music lessons, so learned on their own, thus creating a new sound . Its worth watching if you're interested.

A lyrical message worthy of modern rappers — but Olympicaly superior thereto.
