The secret behind why Windows 10 is so good [Microsoft Listened to you, more than anything else]
CNN Money ^ | 06/12/2015 | David Goldman

Microsoft listened to you. More than anything else, that's why Windows 10 won't be another Windows 8 or Vista.

In conversations with CNNMoney, top decision makers at Dell, Hewlett-Packard and Toshiba noted that Microsoft requested their input throughout the process of creating Windows 10. They said Microsoft listened to their feedback -- and, vicariously, PC customers' feedback -- and made a better operating system as a result.

Responding to customer demands. The PC makers said that process was vastly improved from the way that Microsoft (MSFT, Tech30) conducted its business ahead of the Windows 8 launch. They said Windows 8 felt forced on them while Windows 10 felt like more of a conversation.

"It's pretty cool how responsive Microsoft has been to feedback," said Mike Nash, HP's head of product strategy. "We were right there in the room planning Windows 10 with them from very beginning."

"There's a new dawn at Microsoft," said Allison Dew, Dell's marketing chief (and a former Microsoft employee). "What we've seen in terms of development and cooperation with Microsoft this time around is unlike what we've seen in past years."

Windows is good again. The result, they say is a much more refined operating system that customers will get excited about. That's a very different experience from Windows 8, which literally had customers calling their PC companies in droves wondering how to get to the desktop or turn their PCs off.

"We're more excited about this launch than we have been in a really long time," said Dew. "I've been through amazing windows launches and some that weren't quite as amazing. This has the feel of something amazing."

"Windows 8 was a difficult out-of-the-box adjustment to consumers," said Jeff Barney, head of Toshiba's U.S. PC business.

If MS were really smart, they’d resurrect XP and package it as 10.

I hated my Vista until we bought a PC with Windows 8. It was returned to Best Buy the next day and now I have a loving relationship with Vista.

I have Win 7 at work and Win 8.1 at home. I often get email attachments in Winmail format, which I can’t open. It’s not consistent from file type or sender.

I sure wonder and hope Win 10 fixes this.

My work computer is windows 7 and doesn’t boot the first try almost half the time. Windows Explorer craps out regularly too. It may be all the company network software some of the time. My mac is a lot better but still nothing to write home about. End of the year I may change to a 10 Skylake.

“Time will tell, WIn 8.1 is fine once you install Classic Shell and banish the Metro garbage.”

This is my opinion also!

New Coke.

They wanted to switch Coke to High Fructose Corn Syrup instead of sugar, but it tasted like crap.

So, they made New Coke that tasted like rotted crap.

Then "in response" to complaints, they brought back "Original Coke." Except "Original Coke" didn't mean original Coke, rather it was a trademarked phrase that meant Coke with HFCS. Compared with New Coke, though, it tasted great - and they removed all the truly original Coke from the stores.

Same with Windows 8. New Coke. Terrible.

But Now... you have Windows 10, which is "just like" Windows 7 - except it has HFCS instead of sugar. Because like the Coca Cola company, Microsoft "listened to what it's users wanted." In this case, the HFCS swap means that Windows 10 is going to (fairly soon) be a subscription operating system, and already is one that is constantly monitored through the Net like a phone or tablet is, in comparison with Windows 7 "sugar" that fundamentally operated outside of the Net.

And everyone will praise Microsoft for getting rid of Windows 8, like everyone praised Coca Cola for getting rid of New Coke.

I have a Surface 2 running Windows 8 RT and it has a desktop.

I just don’t understand all the lies, misunderstandings and rumors about Windows 8 that I constantly hear on this web site. Not saying you’re promoting this, but the Desktop is indeed part of Windows RT.

The only thing RT doesn’t do is run .exe and .msi files, but will run apps (.appx). This has often been a problem for me but because of the very low power consumption my battery lasts for days on one charge. All in all I would rather have an intel-style CPU.

As for those who hate it; If you don’t like it, don’t use it!

If you like Apple better; fine, that’s your choice. Same for UNIX and Linux.

As for me, I like all the above, and make very good money learning and supporting them all.

Windows NT 4.0 Server only need 16 MB or RAM, 124 MB of disk space, and a 25MHz i486 processor.

Alas Babylon!, MCSE since 1999.

Any PC that can run x86-64 instructions with full 64-bit memory addressing--though I'd recommend at minimum 8 GB of RAM (RAM is dirt-cheap nowadays). That means any PC that uses the Conroe-core Intel Core 2 Duo or Dual-Core Pentium CPU or the AMD Opteron or Athlon 64 CPU can run Windows 10 pretty well--essentially most PC's built since the fall of 2007.

There should be a bunch of If's added to that statement ;

If the BIOS has support for that version of Windows.

If there are drivers available for legacy hardware in the PC.

If the CPU is powerful enough to handle the Windows Bloat that occurred between the time it was new and now.

I am posting this from the 32-bit version of Windows 10, BTW. (1GB RAM, and an SSD; the disk-swapping is barely noticeable as a result)

My computer helper has the beta version and loves 10.
I told him I was waiting until they get it just right.

I went from XP to 8.1 and like 8.1. Windows 10 will probably be pretty good.

Strange, think you are onto something with being work networked. My home Win 7 box has been dead steady since I got it over a year ago. my main beef is they way they changed where Windows stores stuff forcing you to go hunt for it. Should have left the directory structure the hell alone.

I am definitely interested in Direct X 12, so I’ll be switching over when it comes out and drivers are ready to employ that.

I’m very happy with Windows 7, but I took the deal for a free upgrade to Windows 10. A lot of my decision was based on getting Windows 10 for free and Microsoft plans to quickly drop support of Windows 7. I guess I will see what happens when I get the update.

I have been working with computers since before FORTRAN 77 came out. 40 years or so off and on. I hate it every time they come out and some brainiac kid programer says this is great follow me. So now after being harassed by this stupid touch screen 8 that works poorly on a real computer I am expected to start all over and learn something new again , again, again,... Windows 8 will not even find 8.1 because it can't find the “store” so how is it ever going to find a new system?

The primary issue here is full hardware support for x86-64 CPU instructions and real 64-bit memory addressing if you have 4 or more GB of RAM. I have an old machine running the Intel Dual-Core Pentium CPU (essentially the Intel Core 2 Duo CPU with less on-die memory cache) and with 8 GB of RAM installed; Windows 10 will run fine, if just a touch slow due to CPU limitations.

About the same time working with systems.. started in 79/80 as a bench tech ...ran a PDP8 as my test system....i hate windows 8 with a passion...

10 is the update to 7 that window 8 should of been...and microsoft knows the burned people so bad on win 8 bs..that many people are going to be leery of 10...so that's why it's free to.

I do really detest programmers the I think they're so damn smart that they basically push around the end-user

applications or an operating system should be your servant not try to force you into doing it the programmers way....

8 really violated everything I've ever learned in 30 plus years of computers on application or operating system . its was trying to force you into their frickin marketing paradigm....I I'm glad everybody on the 8 team got canned

Nonsense. I happen to use Windows 8. And hey? Just take a chill pill will ya? It’s only an operating system. It never took your wife.
