45 Manly Hobbies
The Art of Manliness ^ | January 6, 2010 | Brett & Kate McKay

Back in the day, leisure time was not thought of as a chance to “veg out,” but as opportunity to pursue one’s passions and interests, an outlet for the sides of a man that were not stimulated in one’s career. Unfortunately, we now often spend our leisure time camped out in front of the TV or computer. We say that modern life has become too stressful, that when we have free time, laying on the couch is all we can manage.

The truth is that spending our leisure time in satisfying pursuits, “fun work,” will refresh us far more than a non-stop marathon of playing Call of Duty. Hobbies can bring you joy, increase your eye for detail, keep your mind sharp, expand your creativity, and help you meet friends and learn valuable skills. They add interest to your life and help you become a more well-rounded man. If you’ve been feeling depressed, restless, or apathetic, the problem may be the lack of having something in your life you feel passionate about, something that brings you needed fulfillment.

I met her when she was on vacation in California, we fell in love, and she had just returned from Wales to join me, when I introduced her to that little adventure mid way through taking her to Texas, in time I ended the engagement though, and let her stay with her family in Wales.

but KNITTING?

You can use your knitting and sewing skills for survival situations and dealing with deep wounds you receive from battle.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I’m way behind the times. Still use a PS2 with basically two games, Splashdown I & II. Racing waverunners. It’s a blast on the giant tv and surround sound.

Looking at that youtube clip.....
Wow, video games have come a long way. It looks real.

If you have a mega gaming rig and a full compliment of HD textures and graphic mods, it is hard at times to tell you arent watching a movie. Except you are playing the movie.

My system is a couple years old but still pretty good and I often mistake it.

This is from 2013. The gfx cards today would lay this to waste.

As retirement looms this year I have this list that I am or will be doing to fill my time.
Boating and fishing.
Lake house maintenance.
Swimming
Wood Carving
Photography and oil painting.
Internet freeping
History bibliophile
Hiking and desert GPS off roading
Cooking and smoking meat and veggies
Fly fishing.

I might add in some duck hunting which I enjoyed some years ago but that is a wait and see thing as it isn’t too close to my place.

“Lumberjacks DID wear nylons under the wool pants to cut the wind.”

Bikers too. Riding buddy of mine wore panty hose under his leathers when it was cold. 6’5” and 325lbs- no one ever teased him about it.

There’s a reason windbreakers are made from nylon. It works.

Good enough for Bruce, Good enough for lesser men like bikers and Lumberjacks ;)

“Good manly hobby.
I do it on two wheels”

Several references to motor racing here but none to crewing. I crewed for a EBC endurance racer (highly modified Yamaha 1000) for several years. Lots of wrenching and the only form of bike racing with scheduled pit stops for fuel and tires. Great fun but a lot of stress watching a guy go 150+ on a bike that you bolted together, sometimes in seconds.

On a tangially simmilar note, I had the privlege of knowing a lot of the pros in Off-Road racing pretty well. When Ivan stewart was doing the Pro Truck/Spec Truck class (owner/promoter) he took me out in Plaster City in one of the new trucks.

Ivan, for those that don’t know was perhaps the greatest OR racer ever. He got his nicname “Ironman” from soloing the Baja 1000 and being a solo driver most of his career. He also was about the only guy left (at the time)to use an open face helmet. Protrucks are 2 seaters so away we went.

PTs are 450 HP with nearly 3 feet of wheel travel in back and nearly 2 in front. They haul. REALLY haul. Often they would be close to or even beat the top line Class 1 buggies or Trophy Trucks...the Equivilants to A Nascar or F1 vehicle.

So in this brand new, untested vehicle, we went testing. And testing involves pushing them to the limit. Long story short, something went wrong and we ended up doing some rather ungraceful moves out of control at high speed, coming to rest in a cactus patch, many now in our laps.

At which time, the worlds greatest Off-Road racer looks over at me with a very serious face full of cactus and said...

“Oops.”

I about pissed myself.

I played pickup and men’s league hockey for about 15 years, and it is easy to get caught up in that. I went for one six month stretch where I was playing 3-4 nights a week.

Everyone always needs a goalie...:)

Heh, better than turning the net around!
