Second Yellowstone Visitor Injured in Bison Encounter
CNN ^ | 6/3

The sheer size and wildness of Yellowstone National Park's signature bison provide a magnificent subject for camera-toting tourists.

But officials caution visitors not to come within 25 yards of the animals, noting that they are unpredictable and able to sprint three times faster than people can run.

A 62-year-old Australian man who ventured to within 3 to 5 feet of one bison was seriously injured Tuesday when the animal charged and tossed him into the air several times, park officials said in a statement.

This is the second such incident within weeks.

A 16-year-old Taiwanese exchange student was gored by a bison on May 15 while posing for a photo.

Both encounters occurred in the popular Old Faithful portion of Yellowstone.

Probably urbanized people who have lost the awareness that nature is "red in tooth and claw," and these animals are not domesticated pets in a big zoo without walls.

Not only does this qualify for a Darwin award but I’m rooting for the buffalo. It gets one more dumbass off the highway in front of me. All those people who want to kiss a rattler, hug a lion, ride a buffalo, swim with a shark, walk an alligator or fish a golf ball out of a water trap, climb a landslide, or otherwise ignore the laws of nature, especially gravity-——step right up. I’ll buy a ticket to get them there.

First thing a dunderhead needs to know about a buffalo is that they will defend their space-—with their head.

And where did that 25 yard rule come from? Lets do the math kids. A decent linebacker can do 25 yards in 3 seconds. Divide that by three for the buffalo. That leaves one second for dumbassboy to change into his track shoes-——I’m still rooting for the buffalo.

Isn’t this usually the rutting season for such animals?

I had a friend who used to raise them. Australians, not bison.

Friendly creatures unless you give them peanut butter instead of Vegemite.

This is animist microaggression. These bison must attend `No Gore, No Trample’ classes.

The second thing is that they can run two or three times faster than any sprinter in the world.

One sees it ALL the time with tourists in Montana. People who don’t realize that A) without a serious firearm your ass in NOT at the top of the food chain and B) unlike California or Florida the weather can kill your ass two miles from the trailhead if you haven’t taken precautions....

People are always asking me if they can pet my bulldog while we’re out walking.
I say to them, “If you insist you’re welcome to take your chances, but I’d try the end without teeth.” And, “He doesn’t like being `petted’ on the head any more than you do.”

I suppose there are Americans stupid enough to try and take a selfie with a kangaroo, although those things will kick hell out of you. I wonder what it is about `wild animals’ these people don’t understand.

This city boy sheepishly admits to having approached bison and elk at Yellowstone. Somehow, I’m still here. Luck o’ the Irish and an alert guardian angel.
