A crane hauling an air conditioner into the top floor of a 30-story building dropped the heavy load Sunday morning, smashing parts of the building and injuring 10 people.
Workers were loading the shipping container-sized machine into 261 Madison Ave. when a rigging strap holding the air conditioner broke, a city official familiar with the ongoing investigation told the Daily News.
The chiller sheered the building as it fell. Debris rained down on Madison Ave. around E. 38th St.
Part of the 30-story building's facade near the roof was bashed open.

Yes but the article did mention 30 story building. No 30 story building would ever get built without elevators. Before elevators, they wouldn’t build higher than a few stories as nobody would pay rent to walk up all those stairs. In fact in the pre-elevator days, rents got lower the higher up you went. Now it’s the complete opposite.
Hopefully, when they get around to picking up the unit off the ground, they don’t find....well, you know..
Back in the olden days (I’m talking ancient times! With typewriters!), we writers had crusty old editors who would bash our heads if they found us using “sheered” instead of “sheared”.
Ah well, those days are gone. But hey, at least I still have my teeth... :-)
“I’m told you want to reconsider the offer from Don Corleone.”
They call him "Shorty" now.
Don, did you make me an offer?
Nothing personal!
It’s just remarkable how the blatantly racist and misogynistic “dumb blonde” jokes flourished in a time of rigorous Political Correctness.
I think its very hard to tell if a rigging strap will break. Undersized for the load, that is a diferent story, because they are rated up to certain weights.
Damned wither way. At least one way nobody dies or damage occurs.
“I work in Manhattan and I usually walk around the block or whatever to avoid those cranes. I do not trust them.”
I used to work in the building directly across the street from 261 Madison.
“Its just remarkable how the blatantly racist and misogynistic dumb blonde jokes flourished in a time of rigorous Political Correctness.”
The “dumb blonde” meme predates political correctness. They are just jokes, like Polish jokes, etc., I don’t think anyone believes it. I am a Southerner, and I used to go up North; no one recognized me as such because I didn’t fit their preconceived stereotypes, and a FEW would slur dumb Southerners, and they meant it. Most were nice people, however, I’ll have to admit.
Now all the crusty old editors have been put out to pasture (or sent to Jersey) and replaced by computers with Spell Checker functions.
Now the righters trust they're spell chequer two ketch awl there mistakes.
Ewe should dew sew to.
And a funny blonde too, I had to laugh! Putting a shipping container in an elevator, after all. But I could only think it... Thanks for for the humor.
Psst, Hey Cobol, NoCmpromiz thinks he’s spelling his screen name correctly too.
Oh you old dinosaurs, try keep up yeah! Financial numbers came out yesterday, we are halfway to another recession, and our Glorious Leader, the One who is never wrong, blamed that inconvenient fact on Global COOLING! I know, I know, I was confused too, but now I am up to speed.
Heh! That's all right. We'll revert back to the days before Noah Webster, eh? ;-)
You mean...
It’s wrong???
(Spell check says it is too but I’ve been ignoring it because, you know, what does a stupid machine know anyway?...)
It has always been global cooling and never global warming*
* with a bow to George Orwell.

I’m retired.
