The song was written by Berton Averre and Doug Fieger, and released as part of their debut album (Get the Knack) in 1979.
The song was based on a real person, named Sharona Alperin. She was 17 when she met Fieger, who was 25 when he met her.

Sharon Alperin has been a very succesful real estate agent for many years.

The guitar solo and the song's rift have been cited by many bands as pure classic rock. In fact, the song was on President G.W. Bush's nano when he was in office and listened to it while working out.

My cousin was a classically trained musician. Guitar, piano, violin.
He used to say the same thing about the verbiage of the song (i.e. my scrotum). He could also play rock and roll. You should have heard/seen his renditions of Neil Young and Lynyrd Skynyrd on lead guitar. The people in the clubs would go crazy.

Some things are best forgotten as if they never happened. The Knack is one of those things.
Perhaps some Steve Forbert will help you forget.

Another great Steve Forbert:
Steve Forbert - Tonight I Feel So Far Away From Home
When I was young (much younger than I am now), there was a girl in high school that was killer beautiful. I would listen to Steve Forbert's "Romeo's Tune" and imagine asking her out.

"My Sharona" hit the airwaves like a nuclear bomb the summer of 1979. To me, it symbolized the death of disco and the return of rock and roll. Before this song came out, disco songs like "Ring My Bell", "Bad Girls" and "We Are Family" ruled pop radio. Then this Knack song started playing a hundred times a day and what a breath of fresh air it was at the time. Some other great rock songs from that summer were "Drivers Seat" by Sniff 'n' the Tears; "Girl Of My Dreams" by Bram Tchaikovsky; "I Want You To Want Me" by Cheap Trick and "Roxanne" by The Police.
The rest of the Knack songs were derivative of "My Sharona" and they quickly fell out of favor. But for a short period of time, it really looked like they were the next Beatles.
As for Grateful Dead, I'm a big fan as well. Great to see another Freeper into that band.

The song that killed Disco, for that alone, The Knack should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The song that put the final nail into Discos coffin. I agree. The band Blondie did as well. New Wave became too powerful. Disco protested, but it was too late.
