There have been many variations on this particular noir storyline. Body Heat, The Last Seduction, and so on. IMHO, though, D.I. remains the best of the bunch. In no small part because of the presence of Fred MacMurray. MacMurray was one of the most underrated actors of all time. So many tremendous performances - Indemnity, The Apartment, The Caine Mutiny, etc. And when you add in Edward G. Robinson and Barbara Stanwick, well, you've just got a masterpiece on your hands! 8.5/10.

It was considered sordid and un-filmable by the standards the industry had at the time. IT paved the way for many more darker views of human nature.
