Police: Duggars Used A Rod To Spank Their Kids

A 2006 police report detailing Josh Duggar’s molestation of his sisters has caused a media firestorm, yet the document has also revealed another detail that the Duggar family has yet to address: namely, the assertion by one of their children that Jim Bob and Michelle use a rod to spank them.

The allegations surfaced in the police report, which was released in a redacted form last week by In Touch Weekly. The report includes a summary of a conversation which occurred between an investigator and one of the Duggar children, who remains unnamed.

“Inv. Taylor asked [redacted] about getting spanked. [redacted] said that when [redacted] is bad that [redacted] mother and dad spank [redacted]. Inv. Taylor asked what they use to spank. [redacted] said they have a rod. Inv. Taylor asked if they do this to all the kids and [redacted] said yes. Inv. Taylor asked if they leave any bruising [redacted] said no.”

Its a Honor to have Godly Parents who through their examples are still guiding us today. I would have liked your Mother.

I truly, in 16 years, have never seen so much hatred directed at one family .

I’m honestly not sure I’m on the right forum any more...

And strangely, this Duggar situation makes me feel exactly the same, from the other side. Which I find super weird.

I obviously heard of the Duggars. I knew they were religious Christians who had a ton of kids. I have used their laundry soap recipe (but made some changes). That is my sum total of Duggar experience, so you understand where I’m coming from. You may have grown attached to them watching the show; I had none of that.

And when I heard the crimes Josh Duggar allegedly (and admittedly) committed, I was horrified. Non-pedophile 14 year olds don’t do such things. I knew he was a pedophile (meaning, he gets sexual pleasure from children’s bodies). The family chose to protect HIM over the victims.

They sought counseling from a sex offender and a pedophile cop and never reported him to neutral authorities, even just a psychologist who would have had to report him to the police. The parents should at the very least have removed him fromo their home, and placed him maybe with a grandparent or someone where he would have no access to children.

To me, so far, this was just a news story of how famous people are no different from others, how horrible, that was about my first feeling. Then I read down the thread and was shocked to see FReepers saying things like, “Well, Gd has forgiven him” or “Look how the liberal press is jumping all over this good family,” “the Duggars handled this right and kept it within the family / faith” and I was near sick to my stomach.

I have a love like a dear cousin for Christianity. It’s not my faith but I see the works, and I love the Christians who follow. But never do I think that if someone chooses the Christian path that that makes them immune to sin or not responsible for their evil acts. Same as if the fellow had been an Orthodox Jew. Sex molestation, abuse of children DOES occur in any faith, and DOES often get found where children are found because those sick people love to hide under a phony shroud of Goodness to get better access to kids and their private parts.

FReepers wanting to give Josh Duggar a break because he is a Christian make me ill. I don’t find that to be at all Christian.

And now we see that the Duggars also used a violent way to control every move their babies made. Again there are FReepers who don’t see a problem with beating babies who are curious about their environment. I am ill again. And I do wonder if I’m in the right place.

The Duggars appear, to me, from these two incidents, to be fame whores and utter control freaks. I don’t consider either of those things to be conservative. They parent to create submissive sheep adults or more control freaks with mean streaks. They parent to create more attention seekers (there were cameras all over their home). They are not trying to create children with independent, self-reliant confidence to face a liberal world and do what is right.

Please explain your feelings to me, so we can know how this incident makes us both feel we might be in the wrong place. I feel disgust for this family. Not hatred. But disgust.

You would have. I remember her telling the story about when the Titanic sank. She and her dad went to their church to pray for the victims. For a few years before she died, she would sing “Going Home”. She was more than ready to meet Jesus and her family. Sorry, this is making me so sad. It does not help knowing my late daughter’s birthday is June 2. God bless.

Yes but the key for me is that there is no evidence the Duggars took anything to extreme concerning discipline and there is absolutely zero need to feed this piling on to this family who it turns out has some of the very same problems that other families do but of course they never claimed not to. I don’t know where people are finding all these Christians claiming to be perfect. The most common thing for a Christian to believe is “I am a sinner”. The world has created a Christian strawman to attack over fictional hypocrisies as if expressing doctrine truthfully makes one a hypocrite because one can not always live up to it. What about the “We are all sinners” do they not get?

As for parenting skills I’ve seen some of the worst cases involve not hitting but simple indifference, leaving a child alone, confined, dirty, and starving or left in a state with no guidance. One little child I remember in particular died from starvation as his parents played multiplayer games. I also am fairly confident in my assessment that children today do not suffer from the abuse of being constrained too much by discipline but being left to their own devices and desires.

I decided not to read anything else the poster posts about them. No one is without sin. It seems like piling on. This would have been no news except it happened to a Christian family. They are sinners just like everyone else. God bless them. I have not watched the program in years.

Well you were behaving as if the Duggars were performing some kind of atrocity. I’m not interested in a debate over blanket training. It certainly isn’t any worse than putting kids in cribs indefinitely. My wife and I never used play pens but we didn’t spanked our infants but I’ve seen no evidence that the Duggars are beating their babies and I’m not going to get upset over a practice that doesn’t even leave a mark. I may have over reacted but this isn’t about debating blanket training. I think we all need to stop this piling one. The Duggars never claimed to be a perfect family and their every discipline choice shouldn’t be under scrutiny. They’ve never been charged with abuse even though evidently they were investigated which is not a surprise. We had a friend suffer through that and being investigated alone isn’t an indication of guilt. We all should be praying for this family and any families in this situation. I prayed for the Kardashians even though I don’t care for them personally. We are in an unseen war here. We need to have each others backs.

That is exactly my take. Had they not been an openly Christian family in the public eye this story would have been a sidenote.
I have to really wonder about some who want to crucify Josh Duggar who made mistakes as a 14 year old touching girls while they were fully clothed. Sure I’d have been upset had it been my daughter he’d done it too and I did have a situation where a young man was talking inappropriately to my daughter concerning sexual matters which she brought to my wife’s attention and we dealt with.

As for the Duggars I thank God for everyone’s sake that Josh’s 14 year old behavior was dealt with and nipped in the bud before it became a more serious problem. The piling on now seems fueled by an irrational resentment. Now if there was evidence that the behavior didn’t stop I’d feel differently. The guy even confessed it to his wife to be and her parents. How long should one be beaten down for inappropriate teenage behavior? Its as if even some Christians didn’t learn anything from Christ.

I don’t watch the Duggars reality show.....I don’t think I have ever watched the Duggars ......but I know what they are about.....I know who they are and what they tried to stand for.

I’m defending them ....at some level....because they too are innocent until proven guilty.
However in the liberal media.....and select people here at FR.....have tried, convicted in this kangaroo court! and are ready to execute them......after being torn apart viciously, verbally.....
.......some of you want them blotted off the face of this earth.....( not being content that their reputation is in tatters and their sponsors are dropping them)
ANYONE who defends them at any level......is shamed and verbally spat upon!

Good mercy!.......what has happened here.

Imho, no man should use a weapon to spank his children. If it hurts him too much to spank with his bare hand, he’s hitting too hard.

You might want to read the book “To Train Up A Child” that the Duggars use to raise their kids. Here’s the text:

http://web.archive.org/web/20101104141241/http://www.achristianhome.com/to_train_up_a_child.htm

Some decent advice in it...Some very, very, bad.

The Duggars seemed to have followed the advice on Bullying in chapter 16 on dealing with Josh.

Then there is the advice in chapter 13 under “Why is everyone picking on me” telling a girl that is being bullied to shut up.

As for this being a scandal merely because they are an openly Christian family, it also scandalized the late celebrities Michael Jackson and Fatty Arbuckle off the top of my head. Neither of these were openly Christian.

I don’t know where you’re getting the information that the girls were fully clothed, not that it makes a difference. The police reports say the complete opposite.

As for Josh’s behavior having been nipped in the bud, it’s highly doubtful. Sexual abusers of children have a high recidivism rate even when it’s caught early and the perp is given therapy. Josh got none of this. It may have continued but with JimBob and Michelle following the advice in their parenting book, they’d tell the girls to keep quiet.

Spanking a child too young to walk, especially while placing a toy just beyond the boundary the parent has set, is taking it too far IMO.

I’m not hating on the Duggars, but we are all allowed to have opinions. Again, their actions were done without malice, just a bit misguided. And as Christians we do have a greater responsibility towards our children as we are accountable to God for how we raise the gifts made in His image.

"Well you were behaving as if the Duggars were performing some kind of atrocity. I’m not interested in a debate over blanket training."

No, because it puts those paragons of virtue into a harsh light, doesn't it? Can't have that...they're special.

" It certainly isn’t any worse than putting kids in cribs indefinitely. My wife and I never used play pens but we didn’t spanked our infants but I’ve seen no evidence that the Duggars are beating their babies and I’m not going to get upset over a practice that doesn’t even leave a mark."

The evidence you've mentioned more than once is available in post # 7, and it's widely available through a simple internet search. The baby is placed on a blanket and hit with a "flexible object" if it tries to crawl off the blanket. You see nothing wrong with that? Really?

" I may have over reacted but this isn’t about debating blanket training. "

You responded to my initial post about blanket training.

"I think we all need to stop this piling one. The Duggars never claimed to be a perfect family and their every discipline choice shouldn’t be under scrutiny. "

I think they did a pretty thorough job of parading their purity and morality on TV every week, as though they were some kind of moral examples. That's what legalism of the Duggar stripe is all about---showing the world how special and pure you are.

"They’ve never been charged with abuse even though evidently they were investigated which is not a surprise. We had a friend suffer through that and being investigated alone isn’t an indication of guilt."

Josh Duggar ADMITTED to the molestations.

" We all should be praying for this family and any families in this situation. I prayed for the Kardashians even though I don’t care for them personally. We are in an unseen war here. We need to have each others backs."

I'll give you that; you have a point. They all need prayer...the victims most of all, I would say.

But I'm really tired of hearing them referred to as Christians. They're members of the Gothard cult. Christianity doesn't require women to be covered neck to feet (as with Islam).

Who in the world do you think you that you can make that determination? It's God's job, not yours to determine who is or isn't a believer.

You want to discuss legalism. Let's do it. Do you think God can forgive anyone for any sin, including child molestation? Do you think Duggar can be forgiven? How do you know he hasn't already been?
