Whatever the merits of his decision, it certainly was NOT based on funds.

All Ivy League schools have scholarship money out the wazoo.

But they don’t necessarily give it out. Few if any full boat scholarships at the Ivys.

But do they hand it out they billons of dollars just sitting there collecting interest.

Wonder what percentage they truly give out I would bet that it is small.

As a parent of 2 current Ivy Leaguers I can tell you they do not give that money to white males based on merit. One of mine probably didn't merit money. But the other one had perfect grades at a tough private high school, an almost perfect SAT and extra curriculars out the wazoo.

While paying for private schools before college we thought we "get it back" with scholarships but that's not the way they works. There are very few merit scholarships and they don't come from the Ivy League endowments. The merit money comes from other groups and the Ivy Leagues subtract that from the "need money" they give.

For example if our son's education is $65k/year and they calculate that we can afford $39k/year they give a $26k/year "need scholarship". Then our son gets $5k merit money so they decide he only gets $21k/year "need scholarship". I'm actually glad we didn't have a college savings fund because they use that to reduce the "need money" they'd give us. Anything we had saved previously would reduce the "need money" I'm getting now.

You're absolutely right! My nephew was Valedictorian of his exclusive private school in Detroit as well as being named all state defenseman on his school's state championship hockey team.

He was recruited by all the Ivies for his hockey prowess but instead chose on the small private Williams College in Boston where he could get a good education and be a starter on his school's hockey team from his first year on..........

His family's income prohibited him from receiving any financial support but that was OK with them............
