Board members of California's Oakland Unified School District unanimously voted on Wednesday to cease suspending students for what they call "willful defiance." Those behaviors can include swearing/yelling at teachers, refusing direct orders, texting, and storming out of class, to name a few.
The reason? Concern that too many black students are being suspended for willful defiance.
One sophomore student, Dan'enicole Williams, told the San Francisco Gate, "They never take time out, if someone is sleeping in class, to ask what’s wrong. They may be acting that way because they didn’t eat the night before.”
"We’re getting pushed out of schools,” she added. “They don’t care about us.”
Along with suspensions, the new policy will also include bans on expulsions and transfers of students to other schools for multiple infractions.
According to the SFGate, the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights has been investigating Oakland schools' "disproportionate suspensions" for several years. The district signed a voluntary agreement in 2012 that brought in Manhood Development classes for black males to address behavior issues and to begin discussions on "restorative justice." These programs, dubbed "alternative discipline," can cost districts upwards of $2.3 million dollars per school year.
Vowing to cover those costs in his 2015-2016 budget, Superintendent Antwan Wilson said, “This is about reintegrating students into the classroom rather than excluding them from learning."

No doubt some school “rules” need to be addressed for fairness. However back in the days, there would have been VERY LITTLE if ANY reasons such as were described that would get you suspended. Why? First of all, we were all taught discipline, a rule WAS the rule and we followed it but not so today.
Those kids are completely out of control and having no consequences for their actions only enhances the problem.
And we wonder why the prisons are so crowded. Why Baltimore, Ferguson, Detroit, Philadelphia, etc. have problems with their youth?

Yes I can see where it would lead to unfair suspensions.

It is very typical now for students to tell you, "F__ you. I gonna get you fired." They can say filthy things to you, threaten you, say embarrassing things about your appearance, marital status, religion, etc. Nothing happens to them. You are just a tethered goat, staked out for their amusement to have at.
How sick is this?
What our stupid PC culture has done is create a group of millions of people— American blacks— whose behavior and beliefs are left unchecked, unchallenged, and uncorrected through the regular social mechanisms of mockery and scorn. It’s like a large-scale, massively destructive social experiment. The end result is someone named Q’Donkeyius walking around with his pants only pulled up to mid thigh.
Might as well just hand them all shovels, the world needs ditch diggers, too.
This school year will see a mass exodus of teachers. Who wants to work in a war zone armed with nothing but a grade book? And that’s probably the next thing to go.

Weed, ETOH, crack -- that's everywhere, but y'know, you d*mn*d white privileged cracker gentry don't live in our world, where we have to choose between sleeping with a full stomach and attending school with the intent of learning something, versus getting high and partying all night.
A good friend once lived in Oakland Hills. His 2 boys got tired of confrontations and theft of their property. He moved out 100 miles NE of the Gay area to escape back in the early 90s.

Cosnervatives frequently advocate that the States and local communities are the proper laboratories for government experiments.
As long as this is done in a community where I have no stake,I see this as an experiment by liberals which should be allowed. If local officials are willing to sacrifice their schools to try and change human nature in a social cause, then good for them. If the experiment fails, they will find some excuse, but never take responsibility.
I have grand children and now a new born great grandchild whose schools will probably continue to enforce some rules of conduct. They will probably be able to compete better in the modern economy than those poor lab-rat children in Oakland.
couldn’t they just re-classify Oakland schools as day care centers and be done with it?
the rule against suspending black students is less about disproportianate discipline than it is about not getting paid by the state based on student attendance.

Gentrification is pushing blacks out of Oakland so the wise guy class disruptors will be decreasing every year. Chinese, Asians and hi-tech workers (like at Google) are taking over Oakland because it is still relatively cheap for the Bay Area

I recall when one had to graduate HS in Virginia. Yes, in the early 60’s we had two 21 year old males in my senior class. The only way a male could get out without graduating was to join the military. If 17, one needed their parent’s signature for the military. A female, if pregnant, was no longer in High School. We only had one pregnant gal who had to leave out of over 950 in my graduating class and the couple got married. The male finished HS.
Sad.
I agree. When I have seen Waters interview so called college students I really question just what the hell is going on these days? I have asked both of my sisters who are retired teachers and 9 years apart in age(70 and 61). Neither one really gives me an answer.
