As I have written about previously, there were a total of 3,542 volcanic eruptions during the entire 20th century. When you divide that number by 100, that gives you an average of about 35 volcanic eruptions per year. So the number of volcanoes that are erupting right now is well above the 20th century’s average for an entire calendar year.
especially seems to be true of the Ring of Fire.
If you are not familiar with the Ring of Fire, just imagine a giant ring that runs around the outer perimeter of the Pacific Ocean. Approximately 90 percent of all earthquakes and approximately 75 percent of all volcanic eruptions occur within this area, and the entire west coast of North America is considered to be part of the Ring of Fire.
For so long, the west coast has been incredibly blessed not to have experienced a major seismic event. But scientists tell us that it is only a matter of time.
And right now, just about every other part of the Ring of Fire is shaking violently.
For example, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake just hit Japan on Wednesday…

That headline should have read, “34 Of Them Are Along The Ring Of Fire”

It is apparently common for volcanoes to follow major earthquakes (measured in years to decades) and there have been magnitude 9ish quakes near Japan, Sumatra and Chile within the past 20 years. If the Cascadia fault slips and gives a 9 to the Washington-Oregon area, one would expect Mts. Hood, Shasta and/or St. Helens to blow again, too.
Global warming. Cow farts. SUV exhaust. Fossil fuels.
Wasn’t there a movie years ago along these lines..all the volcanoes on the Pacific Rim erupt...movie ends with Earth having a second moon..

The number I did not see was Standard Deviation. If this is a big number, like even three or four, this might be a big deal. But I’m betting it’s not.

Since volcanoes follow earthquakes, then they must cause earthquakes. Isn’t that the reasoning that’s been accepted by the global warming cult?
Indeed I did, and for that matter maybe one or more other volcanoes will form that we don’t have (or know about) yet. But when a large quake happens, major stresses in the rock are relieved, stresses which might have been reducing pressure on the mantle. With the stress relieved, the full weight of the rocks again appear on the mantle, possibly forcing magma up.
Unimpressed. Noted, but unimpressed. We’re looking at a 15% higher-than-normal rate, which seems within the likely standard deviation. Even continuing the trend thru the year to 30% above average, it’s a small enough number of events that a few more make for a big statistical deviation which is still within the likely norm.
Get back to me when we’re 100% above average.
In the meantime, move away from volcanic areas. Just the smart thing to do.
