NEW YORK (AP) When Oprah Winfrey was a youngster, the mere sighting of an African-American on television was occasion to alert all the neighbors, she recalled.
"We would call them to say, 'Colored people are on TV! Colored people are on!'" The only black child she was ever likely to see telecast was the unflattering role model Buckwheat on the ancient "Little Rascals" comedies, Winfrey added.

Why is Oprah hating on Buckwheat? He was a goofball like the rest of them. Only Darla was lovely in any way. I suppose that ticks her off too. If only Michele Obama had been alive to be a little rascal!
Question; Was Samantha of AMOS AND ANDY white? I remember seeing an advertizement for some product, and the “white” woman was a spitting image of Samantha! Or was it Samantha done up in white face.
I was just a little kid but I noticed it!
And who can forget the MYSICS KNIGHTS OF THE SEA!
Buckwheat Winfrey?
This just in: Buckwheat Winfrey! Also, liberals have no brains, part 5,280 [of the day].
One of my all time favorite episodes of Amos & Andy was the “Invisible Glass” episode. The glass had to be heated to “100 degrees centipede.”
lol
Yup. I think they were called “race films.”
Found an advertisment for a collection of said films, in a magazine once.
TCM shows them during black history month. Watching them makes me proud of my country, great things were done without the govt, too bad Michelle O only felt that way when her husband was selected.
Yeah, why does everyone pick on Buckwheat? All of the kids were supposed to be funny - Spanky, Alfalfa, etc.
And, for the record, the actor who played Buckwheat later served in the U.S. Army and then found work as a film lab technician:

He died too young, but he lived a good and honorable life, apparently.
They interview people today to talk about how bad things were 40-50 years ago, and then say or imply that it’s the same/no different today. Or that it might appear better but there’s still so much more to do.
All that crap.
Besides the Nazis, I mean.
ahahahaha for ya!!
Thank you!
George Stevens... the man such an edumocation
it took a Man with Humungous Edumocational Creedentials to run the MYSICS KNIGHTS OF THE SEA!
ahahaha A great way to begin a Friday Morning
Thank you!
I dont remember Samantha
In the very early years of TV, Nat King Cole had his OWN show.
In nearly all of the great Westerns, there would be an occasional Black character. It was proportional to the actual demographics of the old West, with freed slaves taking jobs as cowboys, cooks, railway workers, etc.
Star Trek introduced a “Charming Negress” as a primary character who appeared every week.
Julia was an RN who was a widow and supported her own children.
The Jeffersons moved on up.
Sanford & Son gave us memes that we still use to this day.
And Oprah is one of the richest people on the planet.
whine, whine, whine.
