Since moving to CT/NY area, I've never seen so many pizza joints in my life. It's seems that the entire NYC metro area is eating pizza.
There was a pizza place in the same building as the gas station on the next exit west of our small town in NJ. They had THE best calzones!
In New Mexico there was a 7-11 type store where I lived for a month doing some work. They had THE best pork ribs!
But in NYC, people do a great deal of walking.
Yeah, but most pizza in the NYC area today is mediocre to crap. Italians don't even operate most pizzerias today. Mexicans and Middle Easterners do. Over the past several decades large numbers of Italians left the area.
Convenience store fast food ain’t too bad when you’re on the highway and have to be somewhere in a hurry. Pizza slices, hot dogs, sausage biscuits, etc. It’s all right there under the heat lamp. You just grab the pre-packaged crap, get a bottle of water or soda from the cold box, pay for it, and you’re on your way. You don’t have to stand in line and wait for the spongebobs behind the counter to prepare it for you.
Casey’s Pizza is actually quite good; the stores have full pizza kitchens. Some of the newer ones have full “Subway” style sandwich stations too. Around lunchtime, they have 5 or 6 types of Pizza available by the slice. They also have a really good breakfast pizza.
I don’t generally order whole takeout pizzas there, but grab a slice a couple of times/week. Funny story: One time that I did order a whole pizza I wanted green olives as a topping. That is not a topping that they offer, but the kid working said he would just grab a jar of olives (which they had in their little grocery section)so that he could accommodate my request. Great customer service! Except that he put the entire jar of olives, still whole, on the pizza...it was VERY “olivy”....LOL!
