Then I shut off all automajik updates.
Not just on windoze, but on all OSs I run.
If it works, why update it?
I watch the network to make sure I don't need any security updates. And I generally don't.
It ain't broke. I ain't fixing it.

That doesn’t sound like a bad idea
I’m thinking that they need to come up with a way to have the OS on a different hdd totally than everything else. Make it as hard for hackers and malware to mess up as possible

XP baby !!!
Just waiting for a third party to come along with a few Java/flash updates.
I've been off the grid since 1989 up here in upstate NY. Got a dozen Solarex MX60 panels, about 1200 Amp-hours of 24VDC Rolls batteries, a Trace 4000W inverter, and a pair of Trace C40 charge controllers (like yours), one for the PVs and one for my wind machine, an old 1940's Jacobs 2.6KW DC genny that's presently offline for repair.
Warms my heart to see another off-gridder! :-)
It is a good idea to stop the churn and not lose apps that work that are now being turned into "cloud" services with a monthly fee.
Once your system is old enough it won't be a target for hackers anymore. The old exploits will still be around but those can easily be ID'd by signature.
