American Pharoah is a pace setter too. But he also finishes strongly. A quality shared with many of the great ones. The late great Ruffian and Barbaro ran that way.

There are questions marks with his style and Baffert has compared him to Point Given, who faltered in his Derby attempt. In a 20-horse field (or recent Derbys), almost anything can happen (see: Giacomo beat Afleet Alex).
Three of the last four winners, IIRC, came from the auxiliary gate with California Chrome snapping that trend, so perhaps that will benefit three strong contenders in A.P., Upstart and Far Right.
I think this has the necessary factors for an entertaining race, and the same with the Oaks on Friday. Similar to many, I thought last season’s crop of three-years-olds was subpar but I don’t make that same statement with this group.
I hate when theres such a large field. I hope a few drop out before post time.
...
It’s that way every year at the Derby. Instead of a race, they should call it a stampede.
O don’t remind me.
If there was a drinking game for every time that idiot network said”California Chrome” I would still be in rehab.
All the way to the winners circle where that moron Bob Costas actually ask the winning owner what he thought about how California Chrome did.
Dortmund is HUGE, 17.2 hands.
It certainly does seem to be shaping up to be a great race.
Yes...and look at those nostrils!! Sire is Big Brown...
Thanks for posting the links...deep field this year. Good crop of 3year olds as they say...let us know your final picks (if you have any) and I’ll do the same...
I don’t consider that communist SOB an American.
Going over to watch Secretariat. win on some video no horse or human will ever top that Belmont
Will do. I usually look for a solid closer to place a good-sized show bet on. Show payoffs are typically very good in these major races. Large fields and once-a-year, inexperienced betters being the main reasons. Of course, the more money in the various betting pools , the lower the payouts. There is often excellent value in these big races.
Hey, we love California Chrome. Yes, California Chrome. Did I mention California Chrome?
Lol!
Bookmark, thanks
American Pharoah drew a tough post position for his running style.
You’re welcome. Both of those websites actually provide free past performances, in addition to a whole lot more.
His running style is like that of the late great Ruffian’s: wire to wire, pulling away at the end. Big Brown and Barbaro had similar styles. Takes a very talented horse to have that much left after leading all that way. Especially at this level.
