Universal record gives all your music that vinyl sound

So you've bought a turntable with hopes of hearing that warm vinyl sound, but you don't have a record collection just yet. What to do? If you're Jesse England, you 'cheat' using digital tunes. He recently built the Universal Record, a device that lets any Bluetooth audio source work with a record player by vibrating a vinyl disc. You can leave the needle stationary if you want relatively clean output, but get it moving and you'll hear crackles and pops -- a bit surreal when you're listening to songs from your phone. This is an artistic commentary on the "kinetic spectacle" of turntables, so you sadly can't buy a Universal Record of your own. Still, it's a pretty clever way to bring back that analog feel in a world where MP3s and internet streaming reign supreme.

Sincerity is what counts. If you can fake that, you’ve got it made.

Why not just play vinyl?

Oh great, hiss and pops, I cannot recall how much I missed them when I got my first CD player.

Oh, that cold, sterile CD sound! So artificial, no air to it, no depth.

Not long after that I trashed Sterophile and all those wankers imagining different cables and wires had magical sound properties.

I firmly believe the Stereophile crew is now firmly behind the globull warming scam, they are that sort of suggestible types..............

I prefer vinyl. Yes they have a shorter life span but if you take care of them and use a good turntable with a great needle, they sound superior.

I can’t stand the breaking glass sound that CDs have and their supposed life span is a joke, get a tiny scratch on the label side and you get that wonderful digital distortion; I’d much rather have a skip or a pop than that.

Run the signal through an all tube system and you can’t beat it.

Digital garbage In, analog garbage Out.

“I heard a perfect echo die. Into an anonymous wall of digital sound”

You’re kidding, right?

Or do you also like tube TV’s because those HD sets are just too ...

I hated tube TVs. Especially when they ran the heater power in series so you had to test every tube if you didn’t have an ohmmeter and pin out when a tube died.

Tubes for audio rocks. I grew up when the transistor amps were just regular transistors, not FETS or MOSFETS which, incidentally work like tubes without a heater. Regular transistors don’t sound that good, even high end stuff.
Now the new amps with FETs sound good but I still prefer tubes.

As for guitar amps, tubes win hands down; their distortion is better sounding and they sound warmer.

Can I get an artificial 8-track too, with the tape hiss and a big “POP” in between each third track? How about a fadeout in the middle of the best song on the album, a big “POP” and then fade back in?

I think the guy made this just to demo how a record player works. I don’t think he intends to sell this as a product. Chances are he could sell it to the crowd that pays a premium for gold Ethernet cables seeing that they stream digital music better than copper cables. He could call it a mechanical DAC or something and they’ll pay through the nose for it :-).

I get that by eating Rice Krispies when I’m listening to CDs.

This reminds me of a story that some east germans long for their Trabants, because, well, BMWs and Benzes are too reliable, they don’t have the excitement of not knowing whether you’ll make it to where you’re going.

For more complete irony, use the thing with a USB turntable.

the problem with music today is it’s too clean, too perfect- souns like sterile lab produced - gimme some blind willie Johnson anyday over today’s perfect pitch perfect clean sound- sounds just too sterile and lifeless to me- Willie and roscoe Holcomb any day
