SPARTANBURG COUNTY, SC (WYFF) -

An Upstate deputy is called a hero for saving a woman who was planning to take her own life on an interstate bridge. It was all caught on camera.

Spartanburg County Deputy Michael Hubbard responded to a report of a woman sitting on the bridge on New Cut Road near Interstate 26. He said the woman was sitting on the side of the bridge, dangling her legs off, staring downward.

Hubbard asked the woman what she was doing, and she responded, “Just looking for my way out and being at peace."

He said the woman was emotional and visibly upset, so he continued to talk to her while he moved toward her.

Hubbard said he was able to get his hand on the woman's right arm, but she tried to break free and attempted to jump off the bridge. He told the woman, “Give me your hands. You are not going to go out like this today. Stop fighting!”

At that point, Hubbard grabbed her under both arms and pulled her back over the side of the bridge and onto the roadway. He then carried her back to the front of his patrol car. The woman tried to break free, saying, “Just let me do it.”

Hubbard took the woman down to the ground, and after a brief struggle, he handcuffed her. A passerby stopped to help, and opened the door so that Hubbard was able to put the woman in the back seat.

Hubbard relocated his patrol car to a nearby gas station where EMS came and picked up the woman to take her to a hospital for evaluation.

Sheriff Chuck Wright said he could not be more proud of the deputy.

"He just walked up and grabbed her to keep her from dying. That's the people I get to work with. That's the reason I'm proud," Wright said.

"If you don't get anything out of this video, I want you to get the deputies do this kind of thing every single day," Wright said. "I don't hear anybody screaming and hollering what a great job they're doing either, because they are. They're doing a wonderful job. I'll go to my grave defending officers across the United States, especially in Spartanburg County."

Looks like Ghostery blocked it.

Whitelisted temporarily. ..

Poor woman. She must’ve been in some real distress.

How does the saying go? Suicide is most often a permanent solution to a temporary problem.
