POLICE AGAIN PICK UP CHILDREN, 6 AND 10 OF FREE RANGE PARENTS
STAR TRIBUNE ^ | APRIL 14, 2015 | AMANDA LEE MYERS

Posted on 04/14/2015 5:24:00 PM PDT by Thank You Rush

The Meitivs continued allowing their children some independence until Sunday, when the couple dropped the kids off at a park so they could play after a six-hour drive back from upstate New York, telling them to be home by 6 p.m.

Danielle Meitiv said she and her husband began worrying when the kids weren't home by 6:30, but that Child Protective Services didn't call them until 8 p.m. to say the children were in their custody.

Police had picked them up on the walk home after another concerned citizen called.

I would have thought these parents had learned something from the episode in December but I guess they are slow learners. IMO they simply do not want to be bothered supervising any of their kid’s activities so therefore, try to justify letting them play in parks unsupervised.

“Child Protective Services has succeeded in making me terrified of letting my children out,” she said. “Nothing that has happened so far has convinced me that children don’t need independence and freedom, except that they’ll be harassed by police and CPS.”

I guess the mother at least is content to wait until SOMETHING DOES HAPPEN before she can be bothered to pay attention. Great lesson she’s teaching her kids. Looks like the father doesn’t have much say in anything!

FREE RANGE PARENTS

At what age can parents move about freely without causing controversy?

What’s wrong with a 10 year old and a 6 year old playing in a park and being told to walk home by 6pm for dinner?

Why is it anyone’s business but the parents?

I take it you’re not very conservative.

Age 10 is not too young to look after a sibling while having fun at the park.

What is the magic age that children are allowed to run around by themselves? Or watch a younger sibling?

You sound like a helicopter parent that thinks the State has rights over children.

The Red Cross Babysitting Course is for kids 11 and older. Will these CPS kooks bust an 11 year old for babysitting? Or is it OK as long as he/she doesn’t take her charges to the park?

I was also. No harm in it.

However, my comment was really meant to poke fun at the headline. I think we are supposed to express outrage at children who walk unattended, but the headline specifies “free range parents” — so it sounds like the government doesn’t even like parents who walk around unattended!

The gov. employees should do time for kidnapping.

It seems to me that the reasonableness of this event depends entirely on the neighborhood. If it is indeed a generally safe low crime area, then at 10 and 6, a mile from home should be no big deal.

I think the problem is meddlesome neighbors and officious cops who, having been called, don't have the simple commonsense to pick up the kids and take them home instead of subjecting them to the tender mercies of county social workers.

911: 911 Operator, what is your emergency
Caller: OMG, there's two kids walking down the sidewalk!

911: OMG!

CPS: Child protective services, may I help you?

How old are you?

Kids ran wild when I grew up in the 50s and 60s. The rule: Come home at 6 p.m. or when the streetlights come one ( which ever is earlier).
