“Why are they officially showing any movies on campus?”

Rachel Jankowski, on the film, says the university started showing films on Friday night so perhaps students would go to the movies instead of going to bars and getting drunk or doing other things that weren’t healthy for them.

I grew up in Ann Arbor and when I was a teenager, 30 years ago, I used to go to the free movies at the Modern Language Building often on Friday or Saturday nights. So I am not sure this is something recent to counter an alleged surge of drunkenness.

For probably the same reason the barracks soda machines on Okinawa US military bases also sold beer. At least, while I was there. I’ll bet by now on the other side of the world even those have been nanny-stated out of existence.

No under-21 sales in the on-base clubs, mind you (far as I recollect) but we ceremonially made my roommate wait til the stroke of midnight of turning 21... because really it was the only way to make an occasion of it, LOL.
