I went through Basic COMBAT Training (as it was then called) at Ft Leonard Wood also, during the hot Summer of 1978. I had not been an athlete in high school nor someone who exercised and I’ll bet my basic was much rougher than his. I had no big problem getting through it and went on to be an intelligence analyst, just like this criminal.

Did you guys do the long low crawl under barbed wire with M-60's firing over your head in Basic?

I gained weight in basic. But then I was air force.

I too spent a long hot summer Lost in the Woods. The most welcome shower I ever had was when my entire platoon was hosed by a fire boat while we stood naked on the bank of the river. We even had soap and everything. What a thrill!
