Rand Paul accidentally proposed legalizing murder
vox ^ | 4-7-2015 | Dara Lind

We knew Rand Paul had a pretty deep commitment to ending mass incarceration. But his speech announcing a 2016 run for president might have promised something more radical than even he would want: legalizing every type of crime, including murder and assault.

Paul said that in his vision for America, "Any law that disproportionately incarcerates people of color is repealed." The problem is that that describes pretty much every law that incarcerates a lot of people in America — the nonviolent drug offenses that Paul often rails against, sure, but also violent crimes and property crimes.

The majority of people in prison in the US are doing time in state prisons, and most of them have been convicted of violent crimes. But across every single category of crime that the Bureau of Justice Statistics publishes data for, non-Hispanic whites make up a smaller percentage of the prison population than they do of the nation at large.

Just take a glance at this chart. The bar at left shows the percentage of non-Hispanic white Americans: 62.6 percent. None of the other bars across the chart for white prisoners come close to that high.

GOP This might be a good thing if Jebbie tries to get them into the GOP primaries to support him. Rand might divert them and help keep our primaries clean.

This has to be the shortest campaign in American history. Announce in the morning, finished by mid-afternoon.

Paul is the libertarian republican, and the libertarian movement and party, is to the left of him.

“I honestly don’t know who wrote his speech, but he really needs to fire that person.”

I agree, but that still doesn’t excuse RP from saying it = he’s a big boy.

wow Rand just announces he is running for President and he has already jumped the shark. Not sure if I have ever heard quite such a stupid statement from a pub candidate before

“Paul is the libertarian republican, and the libertarian movement and party, is to the left of him.”

That was just my “don’t make me do something crazy” example. All I really care about is rightful liberty:

Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add ‘within the limits of the law’ because law is often but the tyrant’s will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.
Thomas Jefferson

The libertarians should theoretically want to give me that, whether that is left or right. I’ve never supported them or been involved with them so I don’t know how close they come. Concerning Rand, I was OK with his dad’s isolationism but Rand is definitely too America hating, and too likely to spout liberal nonsense for my taste.

I saw some article said Ron Paul supporters are ignoring Rand and favoring Cruz, I guess I prove that a little.

[ and...........Rand Paul used a teleprompter to give his speech...Ted Cruz didn’t need one... ]

Everything Ted Cruz belives in seems to be INTEGRATED INTO HIS VERY SOUL!

And not tacked on like how it is with most other politicians.

By endorsing the “disparate impact” fallacy, that idiot Rand Paul has declared himself a Social Justice War and a member of the Left. Not only does he need to drop off the Presidential radar screen, he needs to be voted out of his current seat.

Exact quote:

I see an America where criminal justice is applied equally and any law that disproportionately incarcerates people of color is repealed.

Rand says America needs more White Thugs?

You know, to be fair.

“Any law that disproportionately incarcerates people of color is repealed.”

If this quote is accurate and in the proper context, and I suspcet that to be the case, then this proves that Rand is no different than the rest of DC. He is simply spewing populast rhetoric without any serious thinking.

I was willing to listen to his case then he:

1. Endorsed Mitch McConnel
2. Attacked Voter ID requirements
3. Had a snarky response to Cruz’s announcement
4. Is now spewing populist rhetoric!

Are you suggesting that the black culture does not celebrate crime and take pride in having been “in da big house?” Therefore, resulting in a continual perpetuation of these statistics?

The inner city culture is destructive and that is what needs to be addressed.

...while it's clear that's not what Paul actually wants to do...

Really?

He said that in his vision for America, "Any law> that disproportionately incarcerates people of color is repealed."

He said "any law". He could have worded it any way he wanted to word it, but he said "any law".

"Any law that disproportionately incarcerates people of color is repealed."

The key word is "disproportionately". Who makes that determination and how is it made? Also, why is it relevant if more "people of color" are committing that crime. The issue should be if the act should be a crime, not a racial breakdown of those who commit that crime.

“Any law that disproportionately incarcerates people of color is repealed.”

There is only ONE!
Crack vs. powdered cocaine.

In ALL other cases it is the BEHAVIOR, and NOT “the law”.
