An arrow to the right of some of the Presidents show those elected to a second term in their own right (that is, they hadn't succeeded to the office due to the death or resignation of their predecessor); an asterisk indicates those who served out both their terms, and that's a very small list. Grover Cleveland's non-consecutive terms led me to put the arrow and asterisk after his second appearance. In the century from Andrew Jackson to FDR, inclusive, there were only five. Our past three Presidents have been reelected, that's only the second time in US history three consecutive Presidents have succeeded themselves in office.

This got started because of today’s topic about Calvin Coolidge (also interesting), which had the comment that Grover Cleveland was “also a good president”. Taking it all in, it’s likely that he was considered at least the better choice when he won his non-consecutive second term. By and large, the two-termers (a few of whom didn’t serve out their terms) belong on the list of our better Presidents; some may have turned out well, but weren’t in office very long (Garfield).

After Grant, the first Pubbie to win in own right and serve out a second term was Eisenhower (73 years from end to beginning); as noted earlier, there few during near-century from Andrew Jackson to FDR. McKinley was assassinated a short time into his second term, Teddy declined to run in his own right to a second full term — until he tried for his own non-consecutive term and delivered the election to Woodrow Wilson. Wilson became the second POTUS since Grant to win a second term and serve out both of them, although he was famously in poor health, and possibly incapacitated, during part of his second term. The other was Cleveland.

The gap from Jackson to Grant was over thirty years; the gap from Wilson to FDR was only 12. After Eisenhower, the next President to accomplish reelection and completing both terms was Ronald Reagan, with a gap of twenty years and five intervening administrations.

What Really Killed William Henry Harrison?

The first clue that the pneumonia diagnosis was wrong lies in Miller's own apparent uneasiness with it. "The disease," he wrote, "was not viewed as a case of pure pneumonia; but as this was the most palpable affection, the term pneumonia afforded a succinct and intelligible answer to the innumerable questions as to the nature of the attack."

Harrison -- who had had some medical training as a young man -- summoned Miller to the White House on March 26, complaining not of a lung ailment but of anxiety and fatigue. Miller did not bleed him, as was the standard treatment for pneumonia at the time. (More about what he did do in a moment.) But Miller may have overlooked a clue that was in front of his nose.

In those days the nation's capital had no sewer system. Until 1850, some sewage simply flowed onto public grounds a short distance from the White House, where it stagnated and formed a marsh; the White House water supply was just seven blocks downstream of a depository for "night soil," hauled there each day at government expense.

That field of human excrement would have been a breeding ground for two deadly bacteria, Salmonella typhi and S. paratyphi, the causes of typhoid and paratyphoid fever -- also known as enteric fever, for their devastating effect on the gastrointestinal system.

Two other antebellum presidents, James K. Polk and Zachary Taylor, developed severe gastroenteritis while living in the White House. Taylor died, while Polk recovered, only to be killed by what is thought to have been cholera a mere three months after leaving office.

Another interesting tidbit (it's not all *that* interesting), this time regarding Mount Rushmore -- Washington was first POTUS, he's on there; Jefferson was alive during Washington's time in office, he's on there; Lincoln was born during Jefferson's time in office (just made it under the wire); and TR was alive during Lincoln's time in office. Alas, Ronald Reagan was born in 1911, 2 years after TR left office. ;') The most recent POTUS alive during TR's administration was LBJ, and I doubt anyone want his sorry ass up on Mount Rushmore.

Tippicanoe and Tyler too! Most Freepers probably know this, but the grandsons (!) of John Tyler, the man who became president when Harrison died, are STILL ALIVE.

Benjamin Harrison was the only great-grandson of a Signer of the Declaration of Independence to become President, as well as being the only grandson of a President to be elected President. (No doubt George P. Bush is hoping to be the second.)
