Looking to plant this spring from the first time in years. Does anybody have trimming suggestions/pointers? My dad planted last year and they got huge with big thick stalks which produced little fruit.

His thought was that he didn’t trim them and just let them grow wild. Does that sound like a valid theory?

While it helps to pinch off suckers, the most likely scenario for plant with lots of healthy green foliage and not so much fruit, is too much nitrogen in the growing medium/soil additives.

No, you get square solid cages similar to these above, and you do trim according to gardening books so that each level of cage can support a branch or two full of tomatoes. This maximizes the fruit.
