UPDATE: 5 killed, 24 wounded in weekend gun violence

8:56AM Monday

March 16, 2015

(CHICAGO) Five people were killed and at least 24 other people–including a 12-year-old boy–were wounded in shootings across Chicago over St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

The most recent fatal shooting happened early Monday outside a Bucktown neighborhood nightclub on the North Side.

About 3:10 a.m., three men got into a fight at Dolphin Chicago, 2200 N. Ashland, and were escorted out by club security guards, police said.

They were standing on the sidewalk outside with a group of people when shots rang out, police said.

One man, age 34, suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the body, and a 41-year-old man was shot in the chest. Both were pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office confirmed the fatalities but no other details were released.

A 26-year-old man shot in the left wrist was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized, police said.

The slain 41-year-old man was identified by family members as downtown Chicago resident Elijah Moore, a father to three children, including a 7-year-old daughter.

“He was a good man,” said Thomas Gooch, who said he was Moore’s uncle. “He took care of his kids, took care of his mom, worked hard… I’m numb.”

Sunday afternoon, two men were killed in a drive-by shooting in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side.

Andre Chatman, 23, and Carey Hollis, 28, were in a car traveling east in the 5800 block of West North Avenue about 3:45 p.m., when another vehicle pulled alongside and someone inside fired shots, striking both men, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The vehicle briefly continued east before crashing into a pole at Massasoit and North.

Chatham and Hollis, who both lived in the 1000 block of North Mayfield, were pronounced dead at the scene, the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

It was not immediately known if the crash played a role in either of the men’s death, police said. Autopsies were scheduled for Monday.

Less than three hours earlier, a 16-year-old boy was fatally shot in the Portage Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

Giovanni Matos was walking with two friends in the 5800 block of West Patterson about 12:50 p.m., when a gray, four-door car pulled up and an argument ensued between the occupants of the vehicle and Matos’ group, according to police and the medical examiner’s office.

Then a male exited the vehicle and fired several shots, police said.

Matos was shot in the head and his friends ran away, authorities said. The shooter jumped back in the vehicle, which sped away.

Matos, of the 5500 block of West Henderson, was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 4:39 p.m., the medical examiner’s office said.

A police source said the shooting was gang-related, as gang slogans were yelled during the argument.

The most recent nonfatal shooting left a man injured early Monday in the Grand Boulevard neighborhood on the South Side.

The man, 19, showed up at Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston about 4:20 a.m. with a gunshot wound to the leg, police said. He told investigators he was in the 4700 block of South King Drive when he heard shots and felt pain. A friend drove him to the hospital, where he was listed in good condition Monday morning, police said.

On Sunday afternoon, a 12-year-old boy was struck by a stray bullet in a North Lawndale neighborhood shooting on the Southwest Side..

He was at a playground about 3:15 p.m. in the 1300 block of South St. Louis when shots rang out and a bullet grazed his left hand, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was treated and later released.

Police said the boy was not the intended target of the shooting, which may have been a drive-by attack.

At least 21 other people have been wounded in gun violence throughout the weekend.
