NEW YORK (AP) As a rabbinic student in 1980s New York, Denise Eger lived away from other seminarians. She quietly started a group for fellow gay and lesbian students, but held the meetings in another borough. By the time of her ordination, she wasnt formally out, but her sexuality was known, and no one would hire her. Later, she took the only job offered, with a synagogue formed expressly as a religious refuge for gays.
Since then, the Reform Jewish movement Egers spiritual home since childhood has traveled a long road toward recognizing and embracing same-sex relationships. That journey has led this week to Philadelphia, where Eger will be installed Monday as the first openly gay president of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, the rabbinical arm of Reform Judaism.

The Reform Movement has been endorsing LGBT clergy for more than 25 years. This story really doesn’t qualify as news.
The (humorously named) Conservative Movement isn’t very far behind in promoting LGBTs.
According to the awful old joke, “reform Jews” are psychologically conflicted from earning like Episcopals but voting like Puerto Ricans. Now that they’re also into homo sex like Episcopals, maybe they’ll start voting like them too?
“Biggest Movement of American Jews”
Actually the second biggest, after the Democrat Party.
We already got one...!!
They can call themselves anything they want except Jews. This movement has nothing to do with Torah-based Judaism, it is however all about diversity, Homo rights and extreme Feminism but to call it Judaism is misplaced. They can wear whatever garments they want but in the end they will die out. The Reform movement has been in a death spiral ever since they officially recognized that a Jew is a Jew by virtue of the father (in 1983). It’s all over for this sect...they will die off.
When Vicki Gene was ordained, we were told that TEC would attract a whole new crowd. Member would soar. Well, when he left, ASA in the dicocese was down I believe by 40%...mostly due to older members moving south and/or dying off. No new crowd...gays are far too secular..
I have known about Reform and Conservative Judaism, but what other types of Judaism are there, besides Orthodox?
A homosexual female rebbe. Obviously not Orthodox!
Then no wonder some friends who are tradition minded Conservative Jews have been gravitating towards Chabad.
Those three are it, although some count Reconstruction, although it has very few official members.
Orthodox Judaism is not a single movement. Very fragmented.
The only real surprise in this story is that Reform hasn’t elected an openly gay president already.
Right. Sometimes there’s a wink-wink relationship between more traditional Conservatives and Modern Orthodox too.
Oy gevalt!
You know I’ve been thinking about that guy.
Wouldn’t you think, with all the hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, of Episcopalians on the earth that if they wanted a gay Bishop they could have found some really holy guy? Instead they pick a family abandoning bum.
I’ve always wondered about that.
Well..first, you have to be an Episcopal priest...and gay, to begin with..and also, a total narcissist...
Do these people believe in the Old Testament but conveniently ignore the story of Sodom and Gomorrah?
You can be an ATHEIST and still be a Reform Jew. I *hate* that the media counts them among the Jewish people Reform Jews are NOT Jews - any more than Messianic Jews.
They are creating deliberate confusion.
Generally, all organizations (pollsters, researchers, government, etc) counting “Jews” accept anyone who self-identifies as Jewish. They do this for other religions and minorities (mostly) as well.
Of course, Jew-haters count someone as Jewish if they’re suspected of having some indefinite percentage of Jewish blood regardless of that person’s claims about himself, or in spite of that person’s obvious background.
