I Don’t Love Spock
The Washington Free Beacon ^ | March 6, 2015 | Matthew Continetti

Posted on 03/07/2015 10:05:16 AM PST by EveningStar

“I loved Spock,” said President Obama, reacting to the death of actor Leonard Nimoy. Why? Because Spock reminds him of himself. The galaxy’s most famous Vulcan, the president wrote, was “Cool, logical, big-eared, and level headed, the center of Star Trek’s optimistic, inclusive vision of humanity’s future.” Just like you know whom.

The president is not the only writer who has drawn comparisons between himself and Spock. I am also a Star Trek fan, but I admit I was somewhat confused by my rather apathetic reaction to Nimoy’s death. And as I thought more about the president’s statement, I realized he identifies with the very aspects of the Spock character that most annoy me. I don’t love Spock at all.

I was just skimming the comments and yours made me read the article. I have to agree—an interesting take and with the read even if one is not a Trekkie.

Glad I read the full article. I haven't seen any of the Star Trek movies and now I don't need to bother. I never got into "Star Trek" when it was a TV series, but for while when I was a student I shared an apartment with some ST fans, so watched a few episodes.

Adam Nimoy was in my section when I was a teaching assistant but I didn't realize until later that he was the son of Leonard Nimoy (his ears were normal).

Post 19 Looks more like Obama sitting down (with the garland on his head), and Boehner and McConnell dancing for him.

And after all, its all about him.

You know, you're right. If a new planet were discovered, Obama would make a statement. He'd reference himself maybe 100 times and the name of the new planet maybe once.

Whatever. When someone does not like something, they can interpret every quality about that thing as something despicable. The author of this piece apparently does not like Star Trek. That’s his opinion.

I think that the first Star Trek episode I saw was Amok Time, when I was about 6, and the show was originally broadcast. I remember watching Spock, seeing his relentless logic and the fine way his brain functioned, analyzing the available data to come up with a solution unmarred by emotionalism. I wanted to grow up to be just like him (maybe without the ears). My whole life, I have endeavored to follow Spock’s example: weigh the facts and evidence, and accept the conclusion that they support. And if new facts and evidence come to light that contradict the conclusion, then it is time to reweigh the evidence and come to a new conclusion.

I wish more politicians would be like Spock—acting on the best evidence possible, instead of filtering everything through a political filter and acting only in a manner which will support a political position.

Obama most certainly is not like Spock. I can’t actually think of a character from the series that has Obama’s narcissism and bends everything to a political purpose.

Wrong movie.

Star Wars, not Star Trek.
