KUALA LUMPUR, March 4 — Police have identified two Malaysians in a video showing a human decapitation by the Islamic State jihadist group in Syria last month.
According to The Star on its website today, the federal police’s counter-terrorism unit have determined the two to be Mohd Faris Anwar, 20, and Muhamad Wandy Muhamad Jedi, 26.
In the video released on February 20, Mohd Faris is reportedly depicted indicating with his index finger while Muhamad Wandy is believed to be the camera operator.
According to Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division senior official Datuk Ayub Khan, Mohd Faris is from Kedah, while Muhamad Wandy hails from Malacca.
He added the two are part of a new IS wing dubbed Majmu’ah al-Arkhabiliy encompassing Malaysian and Indonesian fighters who enlisted with the terrorist group.
The wing is now believed to contain over 100 fighters from both Southeast Asian countries.
It was previously reported that Malaysian and Indonesian jihadists in the IS had banded together in a Malay-speaking military unit, although the numbers were then believed to be a little over 20.
In November, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak tabled a White Paper in Parliament titled “Addressing the threat of Islamic State”, in which he outlined the history of IS, the threat the group poses and the impact it has on Malaysians, as well as the danger in allowing its skewed Islamic teachings and practice of violence to spread in Malaysia.
According to the White Paper sighted by Malay Mail Online, 39 Malaysians are already in Syria, with 17 of them involved in IS, while 22 had joined rival militants Ajnad al-Sham.
This suggests to me a truly sordid angle on the whole enterprise, that the role of grand executioner is offered to new enrollees as an enticement, and indeed as an honor which they dare not refuse.
