Clear sky yields great look at frozen Great Lakes

We finally got a great look at the freezing Great Lakes in the last two days.

The high resolution satellites give us images of the Great Lakes during the day, once a day. Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015, Michigan had clear skies when the satellite took the latest pictures. So it yielded the best look from high in space so far this winter.

Friday's sunny sky also was a great day for MLive photographers to take to the sky and give us an up-close look at ice on Lakes Huron and Michigan.

With the very cold weather Friday and Saturday, the ice continues to grow on the Great Lakes.

As of Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015, here are the latest ice totals: Entire Great Lakes - 89 percent Lake Superior - 95 percent Lake Huron - 96 percent Lake Erie - 96 percent Lake Michigan - 73 percent Lake Ontario - 70 percent.

Ice should continue to increase on the Great Lakes this week with temperatures mostly well below freezing. 94.7 percent total ice cover is the current record.

For some time now there have been stories on local news stations about the ice in Boston Harbor.Although I'm not certain I think that ice in the harbor is quite...if not *very*...rare.

That would be great. In fact, with members all over the country, there should be a blogger/personal category for home town photos. We love America, especially the land, and the Creator!

That was my first ship. I served in (yes, that is the correct word) the Edson for 62 days between commissioning and Surface Warfare Basic School.

One of my first duties as a newly minted ensign was to act as 'defense counsel' for a lieutenant being inducted as an honorary Chief Petty Officer. I played along with everything and wasn't fooled by the chiefs at all. When asked about it afterwards, I explained my family's Navy background and that I had heard stories about Chief's initiation trials and knew that everything was just in fun. This evidently set well with the chiefs. It also got me out of serving again on my second ship when two members of my division made chief.

But...but...the science has been SETTLED. Snowfall will be a rare and exciting event. We are having "global warming!"

Last winter Lake Michigan wasn’t completely ice free until sometime in June I believe. That's right. And we had practically no spring and a very short summer - the trees didn't bud until late May, and then the leaves started turning early in September.

And now they're trying to say the summer of 2014 was one of the hottest on record !! If I remember correctly, we had the central air on about 50% of last summer.

Cold last summer here in Michigan. We had July nights that touched on the upper 30s.

This photo was from Lake Superior in June.

Some places are cold, some places just have a reputation. I heard somewhere that Buffalo NY was below freezing for February. Not average - every day, all day. Big deal, I say, probably happens every year. But that’s only the second time that’s ever happened since records have been kept.

I’m going to go idle my SUV for awhile, just in case.

I got within a mile of Lake Michigan yesterday, and it was so freakin’ cold I didn’t even want to go out and have a look, I’ve been out there already this winter, and frankly, I never want to see ice again unless it’s floating in a glass. :’)

Good grief! Am I the only person who likes Winter weather?

Oh well, it’s a result of childhood trauma. In my home state, I
just loved the Winter. The snow balls, the snow men, and just
the cold and snow in general.

Then my parents moved to sunny southern California because
they hated the snow, and callously ignored my pleas to stay
where we were. But I was only 5, and they didn’t care about
what I wanted. Sigh...

Sixty-three years later, I still love the snow and Winter weather.

You may be... even the winter-lovers around here kinda gave up last year, which was even colder than this year.

Yes. One night last winter, the low was -18°F, 50° below 32°F.

Wow, how long will it take to melt once the seasons change?

Upper Lake Michigan spokesperson here:

Some time in July. But, the great thing is the lake levels are going up! Sorry to whatever state will have a drought this year.

Every year, when the Straits freeze, the snowmobilers make a road and mark it with old Christmas trees. Aside from a plane, snowmobiles are the only way on and off the island.

Oh, and bring your warmest clothing! Our temps have been breaking all previous records. If you want to blend in with the locals, your fashions should include Sorel and Carhart :)
