280-pound catfish: Wels catfish caught by Italian fisherman could swallow a man

The 280-pound catfish caught by an Italian fisherman is a record-setting wels catfish. With an enormous weight of 280 pounds and a length of 8.8 feet, the catfish caught by Dino Ferrari has some people wondering whether the monstrous catfish could in fact eat a man if it wanted to do so.

According to a Feb. 24 USA Today report, the photo taken of the Italian fisherman and his massive catch certainly seems to show “that this thing could just swallow an adult if it wanted to. It’s enormous.”

Italian fisherman Dino Ferrari caught the wels catfish on Thursday in the Po Delta, which is part of the famous Po River. With a length of more than 400 miles, the Po River is the longest river in Italy. The Po River and the Delta are known among fishermen for big wels catfish – but a length of 8.8 feet astonished even Ferrari, who is an expert fisherman.

The wels catfish is a fresh and salt water fish native to central, southern, and eastern Europe. As can be seen in the picture, it is scaleless with a broad, flat head and wide mouth. The wels catfish is the second-largest freshwater fish found in the Po region. The largest fish is the beluga sturgeon which can reportedly weigh more than 3,000 pounds.

It's a well known trick to hold a fish closer to the camera to make it look bigger...

Oh the loins of it all. That is a monster. Looks like he may have taken multiple hits. Looks to be diesel powered but don’t see an exhaust port. :-)

It might have been large enough to swallow an Italian man.

I would have to see this from a different angle as it looks as if the photo was manipulated to make the fish look much bigger than it is. I’ve learned lots of tricks to fool the camera.

I’ve seen a few fish brought out of Tenkiller lake in Oklahoma that were about the same weight and no where near that apparent size. It took three men to hold one up years ago and it was not near as tall as the men holding it.

A real fish of this reported size(280 lb) would not even fill a 55 gallon drum.

Notice how the pig is slightly out of focus but the kid is in clear focus? That would indicate the kid is way behind the pig and the camera is focused on him and the pig is too far forward to be seen in focus.

we bought a catfish about 60 years ago from a local grocer and found it tasted like MUD.
When we complained he said it was because it was a “Mud Cat”.

Wild catfish are not particularly edible, though people do eat them. Farm raised is the only catfish I’ll touch and sort of picky even then. Growing up regarding them as a bottom-feeding trash fish sort of sticks with you.

Photoshopped or clever camera angle.

A 280 pound fish is going to be about the size of a 280 pound man, although it is claimed to be eight feet long.

But, I hear tell of Cats the size of volkswagons at Tenkiller and scuba divers have seen monsters that size near the damn at Keystone. Though one wonders what you can see in all the muddy water and also not get sucked into the works of the damn of itself....

Had a friend noodle a 60 pounder and he thought he was gonna die but, for having a rope around his waist and we pulled him and the fish to shore.

I’ll say one thing, he was a tough, good ol boy and his arm looked horrible.

Couldn’t have been happier though and bragged how he didn’t let go.

I told him the fish didn’t let go but, his ego wasn’t having none of that...
