A French Quarter cigar bar's battle over state and city liquor permits has struck a major chord among New Orleans policy makers and civic leaders.
Councilwoman Nadine Ramsey wants to create a new category in the zoning code -- called a "tobacco retail business" -- to keep La Habana Hemingway Cigar Bar on Toulouse Street in operation.
But critics say that doing so could undermine the impending citywide smoking ban by exempting more drinking establishments from it and also impact the Quarter's long-standing prohibition on new cocktail lounges in commercial zones.

Next they should ban fatty foods and loud music.
They shouldn’t give the cigar bar a pass.
.
Think of all the lives being saved from second-hand smoke.
Hell yeah it should be exempted.
I love going to cigar bars and having a drink of scotch while smoking.
There’s one at Breckinridge ski resort, two in Lake Tahoe and while there are certainly more than I know of in Manhattan, the one I went to was incredible.
The woods this place was clad in just exuded “This is where real men relax”.
Of course women are welcome but, only as a distraction, amusement or entertainment...and they better walk in wearing an overpowering scent of perfume or they will be asked to leave...
They shouldn’t call it a cigar bar. They should call it an interactive freedom museum.
Well, I go there every year on my birthday and love it! Cigars and booze make this a city after my own heart.
If this ‘Cigar Bar’ is anything like our ‘Cigar Bar’ off the Capitol Square which is patronized by our Legislators, I’m certain it will be given a pass.

Looks like the Mafia doesn’t want this guy as competition and ordered the city regulators to shut him down.
Nanny Staters in the Oregon legislature are trying to pass a bill requiring the licensing of any business that sells tobacco products or ‘inhalants’. They would come under the control of the Oregon Liquor Control Commission. They’ll never give up trying to control everything.
They should also ban people from throwing things in to crowds. Someone might get hurt.
Yeah. Beads can be dangerous.
New Orleans was a shithole before I was born, a shithole when I visited in the 70’s, then the 80’s. After Katrina, it is still a shithole.
The only damn thing going for it is the bars and they are going to kill off that with this idiotic smoking ban. And I don’t even smoke myself, so I got no dog in this hunt.
I’m glad I was able to go to Mardi Gras back in the very early ‘80s and see it for what it was and will never be again.
Those rubber chickens are the worse.
I traveled there many, many times on business for a week or two at a time. Stayed in a small hotel in the Quarter. I’ve loved it for over 40 years and, after retirement try to get there at least once a year.
Silliest post I’ve ever seen you type!
I was just kidding about the girls.
I’ve dealing some Carry Nation types of late and insulting them to the point of agreeing to their piety but, we are going to argue the 19th amendment again.
Kind of ashamed to admit that I pissed on Carry A. Nation one night. And I was a teenager who didn’t like alcohol.
It’s kind of weird that she is not buried too far from Dale Carnegie.
