The Iranians did a version of the Star Trek Tholian web tactic using mines deployed by speed boats to box in the mock up. The 2nd stage was small rockets launched from speed boats. The coup d' grace was delivered by cruise and ballistic missiles.

Did the barge have defensive weapons? Did it take any evasive action?

The Iranians sure obsess on getting one of our carriers. It would be a massive psychological triumph if they got one. We have not lost a carrier since WWII.
To: C19fan
See we have nothing to worry about by giving the Iranians nuclear capabilities. I don’t know why our side is so worried about this. Oh brother. How can any American can say he or she feels safe if these nutcases get access to nuclear energy?

Stupid exercise.
They’d never come close to accomplishing even nicking a Carrier.
The support ships, embedded aircraft and anti-everything gun and missile systems would turn their armed forces into pink dust...

But dont panic. The exerciseknown as Great Prophet 9didnt factor in American escort warships and warplanes responsible for defending real carriers. It was mostly just for show.
In the next exciting episode of Jihadi Junkyard Wars!

“But Iran could intend this tactic as a means to disable critical self-defense systems, such as radars, Phalanx CIWS self-defense cannons and missile launchers.”

Perfect. Now we can see how they plan to attack our ships.
I'd expect it to be a diversionary attack with some kind of anti-ship missile bringing up the rear.

To reach and flank a U.S. aircraft carrierand mine the surrounding areaIrans speed boats would also have to fight past the flattops advanced escort warships.Warships? How about aircraft? From hundreds of miles away...

They’d better attack the fleet in foggy weather, because the laser weapons will detonate those mines and destroy their ships before they even get close.

I don’t know much about military tactics, but this sounds more like a chest-thumping propaganda exercise rather than a coherent plan for a future attack.

I think I saw that.

Yes, these people are completely trustworthy. It would be wise to enter into an agreement, one which could bring about the destruction of an ally, with them. They have nothing but the utmost respect for America.

I wonder if the Iranians are aware that Phalanx CIWS and RAM both have surface-to-surface modes ...
And it wouldn’t surprise me at all if USN carriers had good supplies of both Stingers and Carl Gustav’s on-board.
