The Alger Hiss think is an interesting litmus test. When I was a kid my Dad always swore that Nixon was hounded out of office because the left never could forgive him for exposing Alger Hiss (to which I said "who?") no matter how many lefty programs and departments he gave them.
Listening to lefties try to spin their way out of answering that question sure adds a lot of credibility to the old man's theory.
