I shopped at Walton’s 5&10 years ago as a kid. Met Sam and his wife.
Then he bought out some bankrupt BEN FRANKLIN stores and reorganized as WALMART.

He paid a better wage than the starvation wages the local CHICKEN growing monopoly in this area was paying and they lost lots of employees to Walmart.

So the CHICKEN MEN started importing legal Mexicans into this area to work for their starvation wages.

Now the children of those Mexicans are now working at WALMART and the chicken men have brought in Marshall Islanders, Hmong tribesmen, and now AFRICAN immigrants.
We went from a lily white area to a multicultural area all because Sam Walton paid better money.

if it had not been for SAM, we would still be a poverty infested backwater in the NW corner of Hillbilly land.

Walmart’s net profit margin is almost twice Costco’s.

This sounds like a hit piece paid for by George Soros and the Gates family.

Wow. There are DEFINITELY different levels of Wal Marts. Location is everything, I guess. I go to mine a couple times a week, never a bad experience, always find what I need. The ‘Equate’ brand that is WM’s private brand is fine in a lot of instances, such as their version of Benedryl ($1 cheaper per box, same dang thing). I normally use the self checkout, but when I do use a checker I get prompt, courteous service. It can get dicey during the holidays, but not that bad. As far as hiring ‘misfits’ I’m GLAD to see those people. A lot of them just want a chance at work, and wouldn’t be employable elsewhere. Some have obvious handicaps (like the kid who has a cochlear inplant, and is a tad slow), or the hugely obese one, etc. But I think to myself, at LEAST they’re working, and who am I to judge? Considering we are on one income at the moment, my budget doesn’t allow me to be PC. I divide my shopping between WalMart and Winco. Winco has a MUCH better produce/meat section, groceries in general. WM is better for paper goods, personal items, etc.

This has nothing to do with unions ... except unions would make it worse. This has to do with a purchasing department that sits you down once a year and asks for a 10% discount and in return an "exclusive" supply arrangement. The money is HUGE. Sounds like a win/win ... until the second year. When the same purchasing agent sits down with you (after a long wait in their tiny waiting room) and says he "really likes the arrangement, it is working well, blah, blah. .. and so what is your discount to us THIS year?" Huh? We gave you one last year! "Yes, but for us to stay competitive, we have to continually lower our costs. And of course, if you don't give us the discount, we'll have to go elsewhere (it doesn't matter that you've tooled up and hired up to handle the increased Wal*Mart volume). And they do this year after year until there is no profit left ... always with the threat of losing all the business.

If you look at the "garbage pile" outside their purchasing office of vendors that have gone bankrupt ... you'll be amazed at the number of them and the size of some of them.

Selling to Wal*Mart is like getting a first free dose of nose candy from the local salesman. Man (they say) it feels good ... but in the end ... you're DEAD!

Wal*Mart premise is a house of cards, they base their savings on volume and use that volume to get discounts from manufacturers to maintain Wal*Mart's market share with consumers. At first when Sam ran it, everything was "American made" ... remember that? Well now see if you can find something you want that is made in America at Wal*Mart. Why? Because the local manufacturers in America cannot handle the profit losses of working with Wal*Mart ... so the Wal*Mart purchasing crowd turns to China and the third world. Where they don't pay their manufacturing employees. Wal*Mart simply supports the poor labor and environmental practices of our international competitors. The money you spend at Wal*Mart is appreciated by the Chinese as they build their new submarines and weapons.

Seeing Wal*Mart fail would be cheered by many ... not politically, but because they lost their jobs trying to work with Wal*Mart that only cares about the discounts from their suppliers ...NOT THE QUALITY!!!

(Unless you've experienced this first-hand, you haven't got a clue what Wal*Mart is "about.")

Whenever that I go to a Walmart, I park way out in the Dallas North Forty.

Obama's People are there looking for a score to sue you for an injury whiplash law suit in parking lot.

Do not park your vehicle near anybody there.

People with local walmarts are incredibly fortunate. Even if they don’t shop there, Walmart exercises a most salutary Influence on the cost of living in places it does business. They’re getting visibly lower prices at many of the stores you do shop at - on a very wide variety of merchandise, simply by operation of free market competitive forces .

WM/Costco/Target threads on FR are almost as much fun as Catholic/Protestant/Fundamentalist threads.

I’m willing to pay a few dollars more to have people working the store registers and maybe to have someone load the shelves and pick-up the aisles.

Walmart sucks, IMO. I worked in an electronics dept. for over year in 2012-2013. They rely upon the fact that 1) Government based social services make up for their lack of pay for employees. 2) Their rewards system even for employee achievement is SOCIALISTIC (store wide, not individual based) 3) Pay raises are the same for poor and good performing (except for the very top-unless salaried-see management) are a measly .40 per year. 3) Most employees were kept just below full time employment, thereby being ineligible for benefits. 4) The stores (or at least mine) was regularly understaffed which would effect customer service. I can’t tell you how many times I was frustrated by being the ONLY employee on duty on a busy Saturday morning in electronics when my goal was to provide the best possible service to every employee, I COULN’T physically help 4-8 customers at one time.

company stores holding food drives for their own workers.

Usually at holiday time. I guess one way to prevent this type of negative criticism is to NOT hold any food drives......LOL!

Damned if they do, damned if they don't....

I sure liked the black Walmart employee who tried to sell me a shotgun in SC. I had to remind him, “I ain’t a resident yet. But I will be. Then we might talk.”

The WalMart’s by me are intolerable third world hell holes. Foreigners rummaging through cheap Chinese garbage bins. The future of America right before my eyes.

Walmart is quickly becoming it's own worst enemy. It does have problems the biggest one being Inventory. It has to be stocked and on the shelves to sell it. Keeping the inventory at a regional warehouse until the store is out isn't very smart. The computerized inventory is supposed to be backed up by Zone Workers who are supposed to take a scanner around and confirm items are in stock. They don't! I've seen items missing for weeks. When I ask the clerk they bring the scanner and point to the bar-code and say "there's 6 on the shelf". I say OK show me one. Then they stammer around and say Oh the person who handles that comes in tomorrow.

Second major disaster happened a few years back with their Great Value Products only in the food section. They never recovered from that one. Canned foods are mainly Great Value label. No Thank You. Doing away with Lay Away was another minus. It's likely cost them on TV's, computers, etc.

Their Electronics, Hardware, Automotive, Shoes, & Mens Clothing Depts leave a lot to be desired from the days of Sam's Walmart. The worse stores layout wise are what I call the reverse Walmarts. The food section is on the right hand side and the aisles in the middle of the store are a navigational nightmare.

When Sam died and especially after his son died Walmart Corp had new management and it's been going down hill ever since. Sam had "Made IN USA" items and advertised on that. The new management forced companies selling to them to take their manufacturing off shore such as too China.

Politically Walmart pushes things like the "Green" agenda. The skylights in place of daytime ceiling lights in regions where partly cloudy days prevail is a pain also. Walmart is definitely not the store it was when they first came to my area and I would drive 50 miles round trip to one. Walmart is setting itself up like K-Mart did to become second fiddle when someone decides to take Sam Walton's original business concepts and built the next huge super store chain.

One last thing. Years ago when you had a complaint you could call Walmart Corp and you talked to someone there. No days Walmart Corp immerses itself in many layers and is as such isolated from consumers.

I'll give you an example. Anyone remember their corralling policy in Electronics? Only one entry and a highly annoying High Pitched and Loud alarm went off each time anyone entered, left, or stood in front of it talking, unaware of the sensor? I called Walmart Corp about it years ago and the VP in charge of Loss Prevention called me. In a few months there were no more such alarms. Now days to address any issue you get a phone call from an Associate at the local store's office who has Zero authority to do anything about what you contacted them for. It isn't the stores like Sam built that's for certain.
