A soft-spoken beagle really raised a ruckus Tuesday night.
Wagging her tail a mile a minute, Miss P became America's top dog by winning best in show in a big surprise at the Westminster Kennel Club.

Pitting differing species against each other is like comparing apples and oranges. It seems to me that these ‘competitions’ should entail only in-species competitions.
Maybe the SLA Beagle has been trained to rob Butcher Shops and Kroger Stores. When desperate, find a McDonalds Window, and act cute. That tactic still works too. Do this after midnight, no manager around to chase you off.
The best buddy dawg.
That’s just about a perfect example of a beagle. A beautiful animal. I am not surprised she won.
Shih Tzus are not real dogs.
I’m not sure exactly what the heck they are, but they are not dogs.
;-)
Jack Russells rule!
Geniuses of the dog world.
That’s right! Jacks are too busy hunting to be bothered with strutting the runway.
Poodles come in three sizes. Standard, above 15 in. Miniature, between 10 - 15. Toy, below 10. Europeans have one called a Moyen, which is a small standard. I have a mini right now, but if I can talk the hubby into another, I think I might go with a toy. I guess I am lucky he let me get just one!!! Good luck to your wife.
She’s found a breeder for the puddle (or whatever the mid-sized standard is). Since they’re simply small standards, I understand they have all the attributes of the standard, something that the terrier mix in the miniature did ok with, but not fully.
I have had 3 mini’s and one toy. I had one tri-color mini that was so smart it was scarey. The most recent, a red, is just a little s—t. It must be the red-head in him!
You would get along well with her. She’s determined to get a poodle. (And she’s a grandma.)
The breeds compete against each other first in puppy 6-9 months, 10-18 months, open bitch and open dog. So, then it is narrowed down to the “Best of Breed”. Most breeder owner handlers(like my wife and I) are very happy getting this at your typical AKC dog show.
Then the best in breed competes against the other breeds in their respective groups: Sporting, Non Sporting, Hound(beagles group), Working, Toy, Herding and Terrier. This is where the professional handlers tend to win all the time. It is kind of college players trying to play football against all pro NFL players.
Lastly, the winners of each group compete for Best in Show. It is extremely rare when a professional handler does NOT win Best in Show at any dog show, much less Westminster.
FYI, there are bigger dog shows than Westminster. Crufts in Great Britain and The World Dog Show in Milan are considered tops in the world. Westminster is considered tops in the US/North America.
FYI, they never show the breed judging on TV. 2700 canines are entered at the Westminster Dog Show every year. The breeds compete against each other earlier in the day. All you see on TV are the winners of each breed. If you go on the Westminster Kennel Club website you can watch the judging of each individual breed streaming.
It is a little overwhelming. It has taken me years to figure it out.
