I always leave at least 1-2 car lengths depending on traffic conditions. The problem is driving through or around Atlanta especially during heavy traffic conditions.
99.9 % of the other drivers think I am giving them space to weave from lane to lane. Few bother to use turn signals. There will always be one instance of having a lane on either side and a driver in the right and a driver in the left try to claim that space at the same time.
Add the fact that the engineers designing the interstates in Atlanta have a collective IQ of 10 (exiting from 285E to 400N is a perfect example), it doesn’t matter how safely one drives.
